#UAAP78 Day 7: Ateneo Keeps Winning Streak, NU Finally Notches First Win



In the seventh day of action in the 78th season of the UAAP held at the Mall of Asia Arena, The Ateneo Blue Eagles continues their winning streak as they escape past the UE Red Warriors 77-72.

Ateneo started the game with a 5-2 lead over UE with 7 minutes left, but UE's Edson Batiller introduces himself early in the game with back to back baskets to make it 8-7 in favor of Ateneo, but entering the last 5 minutes of the opening quarter UE made a run to end the first quarter 15-17.

In the second period Von Pessumal powered the Blue Eagles as he shoots down three huge triples to keep the pesky UE at bay leading them 43-33 at the end of the first half. Entering the second half Ateneo's lead ballooned to a 54-41 lead as the defense of UE struggles to pick up, the Blue Eagles continue to dominate the Red Warriors as they end the third with a comfortable 63-50 lead.

In the fourth quarter the Blue Eagles maintained a 10 point lead over the Red Warriors early in the quarter, entering the last two minutes, UE made a run to get close to Ateneo 70-73 with 28.2 seconds left in the game. UE still held on until the last seconds of the game, but Ateneo's rookie Matt Nieto seals the game as he gets the two free throws in to seal the win for the Blue Eagles.

Von Pessumal led the Blue Eagles with 21 points coming from 6 triples, meanwhile UE's super rookie Edson Batiller led them in losing efforts with 19 points.

UE Red Warriors 72:

In the second game the defending champions NU Bulldogs finally barged into the winning column and avoided a 0-4 record after dealing UST their first loss 55-54 after a very close game.

It was a close game between the two teams ending the first quarter tied at 17, the NU Bulldogs manage to pull away late in the second quarter to take a 33-26 lead at the end of the first half. In the third quarter momentum shifted to the side of the Growling Tigers as they take over the lead 41-43.

In the fourth quarter UST extends their lead to 50-43 with less than 5 minutes left in the game, the Bulldogs were able to play catch up and takes a 53-52 lead, Ed Daquioag converts a turnover to take a 53-54 lead against NU. Alfred Aroga carried the defending champs in escaping past the undefeated UST Tigers after a clutch fade away jumper with 14.7 left in the game.

UST almost had the chance to take the win back but an offensive lapse by Kevin Ferrer forced UST to commit a turn over that cost them their first loss of the season.
