PH Bags 3 Awards at the 19th Asian Film Festival in Italy; Brillante Mendoza Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Three out of three In Competition Filipino films won major awards at the 19th Asian Film Festival (AFF 19) which was held onsite in Rome, Italy last April 7 to 13, 2022. The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) brought a total of five Filipino films to the AFF 19, including films by Lifetime Achievement Awardee, Brillante Mendoza.

The highly-acclaimed Filipino films were chosen by the festival to be featured in this year’s showcase. Under the In Competition section are Jun Lana’s Big Night, Brillante Mendoza’s Resbak, and Erik Matti’s On the Job: The Missing 8, while Mendoza’s Gensan Punch and Daniel Palacio’s The Brokers participated in the Out of Competition and Newcomers’ section, respectively.

Two Filipino actors, Vince Rillon for Resbak and Christian Bables for Big Night! shared the Best Actor Award while Erik Matti’s On the Job: The Missing 8 received Best Film.

The festival described the Best Film awardee, On the Job, as “filmed with mastery, with unique sequence plans, and a soundtrack that often goes in line with the dramaticness of situations, this opera has an overwhelming lining and gives us a little-known portrait of this part of the east.”

Through FDCP’s Spotlight: Philippines program, the country was represented by the film Resbak, Director Brillante Mendoza, and lead actor Vince Rillon, in the in-person event in Italy as the festival reopened its doors as a physical event.

Aside from the screening of Mendoza’s films, he was also bestowed the Lifetime Achievement Award by the festival for his outstanding contributions as one of the proponents of “Philippine New Wave” in filmmaking.

“We are grateful to not only be honored with these awards but by having this chance to promote these Filipino films—films that we are proud of—in established platforms such as the Asian Film Fest. This stellar line-up of masterpieces from our esteemed filmmakers are ready to take on the world. And of course, to Direk Brillante Mendoza, Direk Erik Matti, Vince Rillon, and Christian Bables who have been championing PH Cinema everywhere they go, we are extremely proud of you,” said FDCP Chair and CEO Liza Diño.

“The Lifetime Achievement Award from the Asian Film Festival, a prestigious international film festival known for showcasing auteur cinema from Southeast Asian countries, is a significant achievement not just for Direk Brillante Mendoza as a filmmaker, but also for Philippine Cinema. His valuable contributions through his films has helped the Philippines gain traction in the international scene,” Chairperson Diño added.

The Asian Film Festival is considered to be the top art-house cinema in presenting Eastern Asian cinema to the world. This edition featured 30 films from eight Asian countries namely China, South Korea, Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand.

The AFF 19 is just one of the many film festivals where Filipinos continue to shine. Through UniPhilippines and its Spotlight: Philippines program, the Film Development Council of the Philippines gets to support Filipino filmmakers by promoting PH cinema globally through showcasing retrospectives and highlighting significant milestones and key players of the industry.

FDCP Now Accepting Entries for LGBTQIA+ Film Festival

In celebration of the upcoming Pride Month this June, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) will once again be spearheading the “Pelikulaya: LGBTIA+ Film Festival,” on June 10 to 26, 2022 which will be held in hybrid format. The Agency opened its call for entries for the local short film competition last April 13, 2022 and will be accepting entries until May 13, 2022.

Pelikulaya, now in its 2nd consecutive year, aims to champion equality for the members of the LGBTQIA+ community and transcend the notion of acceptance as mere tolerance but as genuine understanding and celebration of diversity.

As one of its featured events, the Pelikulaya LGBTQIA+ Short Film Competition is still accepting submissions of 20-minute short narrative films completed within the last 2 years (January 2020 - May 2022) by Filipino members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

With this year’s theme, “Pantay-pantay, Iba’t ibang Kulay!” Pelikulaya endeavors to spotlight the more underrepresented members of the community with a special focus on trans visibility. Interested applicants are encouraged to tackle the less talked about, less understood identities, and experiences within the LGBTQIA+ community to further the promotion of equality and acceptance of differences.

The competition will be giving away cash prizes of up to Php 35, 000 for the winners of Best Short Film, Best Director, Audience Choice Award, Special Jury Prize, and Special Mention.

Ten short films will be selected to be part of the finalists which will be announced on June 2, 2022 and will be showcased at the FDCP Cinematheque Centres from June 10-26, 2022. More details about  the screenings will be unveiled in the coming days.

FDCP Chairperson and CEO, Liza Diño shares, “We have always believed in the power of films and of storytelling in transcending boundaries of gender and biases. Pelikulaya is not just a film festival, it is an effort and a movement towards raising awareness, calling for equality, and a way of showing allegiance to the causes of the LGBTQIA+ community.”

Aside from the Short Film Competition, Pelikulaya 2022 will feature  LGBTQIA+ themed feature film showcases, special opening and closing films, and special Pride  events at FDCP’s  Cinematheque   Centres   in   Manila,   Iloilo,   Negros,   Davao,   and Nabunturan; and will also be available online through the FDCP Channel. Tune in to FDCP Channel’s Facebook page for upcoming announcements and surprises.

The complete guidelines for Pelikulaya LGBTQIA+ Short Film Competition are as follows:

  • Open to all Filipino filmmakers who are members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

  • Submissions must be films completed from January 2020 - May 2022.

  • The   completed   narrative   short   film   should   depict   narratives   with   the   theme: “Pantay-Pantay, Iba’t Ibang Kulay” to celebrate the ongoing movement toward equality, diversity, inclusivity, and visibility for the members of the LGBTQIA+ community. To further advance this cause, we are encouraging participants to submit narratives that feature the underrepresented members of the LGBTQIA+ community— especially those that depict trans visibility in society. Other examples of themes to explore include discrimination in the workplace, same-sex unions, coming out, and characters challenging the stigma associated with the members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

  • The completed narrative short film should be a live-action or an animated film. Experimental and documentary films will not be accepted.

  • The completed narrative short film must not exceed the total running time of twenty (20) minutes, including the opening and closing credits.

  • All music,   graphics,   video  clips,  and  other   proprietary  materials  used  in  the participant’s entry must be original and/or have all the proper licenses for use by the participant.

  • Only entries that have not been featured in other local and international festivals and competitions, and those that have not won in other film competitions, are qualified to join. Films previously featured in school and inter-collegiate competitions may still join.

  • Selected entries as finalists must not withdraw from the competition.

  • The   decision   of   the   Selection   Committee   and   Board   of   Jurors   is   final   and irrevocable. The board reserves the right to not give an award in any category should no entry merit it. The organizers and the judging committees are not obliged to provide explanations for the results.

  • FDCP reserves the right to create, revoke, and modify at any time, in any way, its entry requirements, rules, and regulations at its absolute discretion without prior notice. Finalists and submitted entries shall be bound by any amendments or addition to the entry requirements, rules, and regulations herewith.

Submissions are still being accepted until May 13, 2022. In order to make an official entry to the competition, here are the requirements:

'VAX TO NORMAL': AN ALL-STAR CONCERT CELEBRATING FRONTLINERS

Thousands of fans and frontliners flocked to the Smart Araneta Coliseum last April 26 for the "Vax to Normal" Concert.

"Vax to Normal," which is produced by Merlion Events Production Inc. in partnership with Red Cross Philippines, is a tribute concert for our nation's frontliners who are at the forefront of the country's pandemic response. It is our way of recognizing the heroism of medical and non-medical frontliners who have gone above and beyond to perform their duties amid the pandemic. Calista, the country's most promising girl group, headlined the concert and performed their single, "Race Car." Managed by Tyronne Escalante Artist Management (TEAM), Calista is composed of six multi-talented members: Olive, Laiza, Anne, Elle, Dain, and Denise. During the weeks leading up to the concert, they trained for 12 hours a day. "From 8 AM to 8 PM. Calista trained their vocals and dance skills with their powerhouse coaching team. Aside from Calista, the concert also featured guest performances by Yeng Constantino, Darren Espanto, Andrea Brillantes, Elmo Magalona, AC Bonifacio, and Ken San Jose. Together, these industry idols energized the audience with their powerful and iconic performances. Many frontliners expressed their appreciation for the tribute concert. They hope that the country continues to heal and encourage everyone to get themselves vaccinated so that we can achieve herd immunity and pre-pandemic normalcy. "We are eternally grateful for our heroes, our frontliners-both medical and non-medical-who have sacrificed and risked so much to help save the country amid this pandemic. Now, we can attend concerts such as this, meet our friends and families again, travel, and much more. None of this would have been possible if not for our courageous frontliners," Merlion Events Production Inc. CEO Atty. Javier Flores emphasized. Directed by Nico Faustino and Musical Director Soc Mina, "Vax to Normal" will be telecast in TV5 on May 1, 2022, 9 PM. As for the future of Calista, Escalante shares that everyone will tuned for updates on their social media channels Facebook (Calista PH), have to stay Instagram (@calistamusicofficial), Twitter (@calistasocials), TikTok (@calistamusicofficial), and YouTube (Calista PH); or visit their website at calistasocials.com. "Thank you so much for all the support from our fans, friends, coaches, and of course, our families. Without their kind words and encouragement, we would not be here at Araneta Coliseum, performing and paying tribute challenge to our frontliners. We also appreciate the kind remarks from P-pop fans who continue to and keep us motivated to push forward and do
better, Calista's leader Anne shared.

FDCP Awards P100K Film Grants to 10 Sine Kabataan Finalists

Ten (10) young filmmakers have been selected as finalists in the 5th edition of the Sine Kabataan Short Film Lab and Festival. Each finalist will receive a PHP 100,000 grant as funds to use in the production of their respective short films.

Sine Kabataan is a youth film competition organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) that provides an opportunity for young filmmakers to showcase their talents and develop their creativity and originality in storytelling while touching on important issues as perceived by their generation today.

The 20 shortlisted story concepts went through an intensive online Story Development Lab. The filmmakers were given training on how to build the messaging and branding of their projects through the Pitching Lab. After the Sine Kabataan Pitching Showcase held last March 27, the Selection Committee composed of Director JP Habac, Producer Armi Cacanindin, and FDCP Executive Director Ria Anne Rubia chose ten finalists from the 20 projects.

The top ten finalists underwent the Safe Filming Lab together with the CineIskool finalists last April 2. The ten Sine Kabataan finalists will undergo the Editing Lab before their final exhibition at FDCP’s banner project Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP) 2022.

“In order for our young and aspiring filmmakers to flourish in this industry, we need to equip them with the necessary tools and skills to further develop their craft and provide the platform where they can share their projects. This is what Sine Kabataan is keen on providing through its platform and intensive film labs. This year, we are proud that the selected finalists chose to tackle relevant issues to the youth using their fresh perspectives. Congratulations to our young filmmakers, we hope that this experience will jumpstart their filmmaking journeys,” said FDCP Chairperson and CEO Liza Diño.

The 10 selected projects of the young filmmakers from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao  explore coming-of-age themes, social commentary, digital technology, and environmental issues. This year's lineup also includes entries in animation, mixed media, and mixed live formats.

The fifth edition of Sine Kabataan film labs and events will be held in a hybrid format. The past two editions were held online and were screened for free on the FDCP Channel. Sine Kabataan began solely as a film competition for young filmmakers. This is the second time that the Sine Kabataan included intensive lab sessions exclusively for the participants.

These events are part of TECNO’s ongoing CSR program, which kicked off in 2021 with the City of Manila, the Ina ng Lupang Pangako Parish in Payatas, and the scholars of Project Malasakit as its beneficiaries.

The project is in line with the launch campaign of POVA Neo, TECNO Mobile’s latest smartphone offering, which celebrates everyday heroes who power on with their day-to-day tasks in order to serve the community. For this year’s CSR activities, TECNO Mobile partnered with Grab PH, plus a few of the country’s up and coming content creators, to reach out to local communities once again, and inspire people and make a difference. Through this initiative the brand also hoped to motivate more people to participate in community outreach programs, and make them see that it isn’t about the size of the donation, but the sincerity to help others.
