Spookiest Films of All Time

Claiming to be a fearless soul? We all instantaneously muster up the extensive valor to watch scary movies especially during the Halloween season. After all, it is real fun to spook your friends--including yourself, just admit it--to keep up with the chilling atmosphere. Armed with a resourceful (or otherwise) costume and a bag of mouthwatering goodies from your eventful trick or treat, let’s see if you can bare these frightening films alone or with peers during Halloween night!

  1. The Shining is a 1980 adaptation of Stephen King’s 1977 illustrious horror novel of the same name. It focuses on a determined writer and recovering alcoholic who works as a custodian at a historic hotel during the off season. He settles in with his wife and son who is besieged by psychic visions. As his son’s premonitions become more difficult, he realizes the hotel's horrifying past and starts turning into a murderous maniac bound to torment his loved ones. The film epitomizes sublime fragments of jump scare:  the captivating visuals and musical scoring, the improvisation of the memorable and startling quote: "Here's Johnny!", and the eerie young twin sisters on the corridor lingered in most people’s nightmares and significantly impressed them. The Shining is hailed by critics, and has become a core of today’s pop culture. Mathematicians at London's King's College utilized statistical figuring in a research mandated by Sky Movies to determine that The Shining was the "perfect scary movie" because of its precise harmony of different aspects such as impact, suspense, and gore. It stars the infamous method actor Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, and Danny Lloyd. The creepy movie trailer may be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S014oGZiSdI.

Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror film, “The Shining” is highly regarded to be one the scariest horror films of all time.

  1. The Ring is a 1998 Japanese paranormal and mind-altering horror film. Adapted from the 1991 novel of the same name by Koji Suzuki, as well as the Japanese folk tale Banchō Sarayashiki, a Japanese myth of fragmented faith and vows resulting to a desolate fate, the movie centers on a reporter who probes the mystery behind a cursed videotape that kills the watcher 7 days after viewing it. The movie became the highest grossing horror film in Japan, was critically praised by reviewers, and garnered immense following in the West. The unanticipated twist in the story and the never-ending goosebumps caused by “Sadako”, the vengeful ghost with her long straight black hair covering her face and dirty long white dress while crawling out of the static television screen and that spooky phone call with the screeching sound after watching the videotape paved its status as one of the most petrifying films of all time. It generated several follow-ups and started a trend of Western reprises, beginning with the 2002 American version. The haunting movie trailer may be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcgCM2FyU8s.

  1. Get Out is a 2017 American horror film written and directed by comedian Jordan Peele in his directorial debut. It revolves on an African-American photographer who unravels a troubling secret when he meets the “liberal” family of his Caucasian girlfriend. It stars the remarkable British actor Daniel KaluuyaAllison Williams, and Catherine Keener. The movie is often considered as one of the greatest horror thrillers of modern American cinema. It is a brilliant allegory on racism and is a political satire on post-Obama America. It successfully triggered the trend of smart horror films (cue John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place”) with low-key but poignant and frightening narratives with a small budget that can still make you think. It instills dread on Hollywood that loves remakes and recycled superheroes. At the 2018 Academy Awards, Get Out won the celebrated Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. As Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian cleverly summarized: “[Get Out] is a mainstream feature film bold enough, tactless enough, irresponsible enough to invoke race outside the solemn confines of documentary…The point is that Get Out takes pessimism and converts it into defiance – and laughs.” The terrifying movie trailer may be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzfpyUB60YY&t=1s.

Young and Chic Couple MayWard Represents Vivo V11

The V11, from international smartphone leader Vivo, has been the talk of the industry since its launch last September. The Vivo V11, the topnotch brand’s latest flagship product, attributes its success in the market to its powerful and innovative features complemented by its modern and stylish design.

It is only fitting that a smartphone as sleek and smart as the Vivo V11 finds advocates that are equally chic and in vogue. It is no surprise that Vivo V11, known for its young and energetic vibe, is now a brand represented by teen royalties, Maymay Entrata and Edward Barber or collectively known as MayWard.

Teen idols Maymay Entrata and Edward Barber share a light moment with their Vivo V11

Edward, a fan of mobile gaming, is more than thrilled to represent Vivo V11, a smartphone popular for its gaming specs. “I am a gamer. I love watching videos. I love listening to music. The Vivo V11 has everything—the space, the screen, the resolution—to accommodate the things I love,” Edward said. He confidently added, “I find myself beating a lot more people in a game, like PUBG, because the phone works quicker than theirs.”

An Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistant packed in its hood helps in V11’s gaming performance. With the Game Mode on, one can avoid unwanted distractions and interruptions since it temporarily minimizes a phone’s invasive call interface. The Game Mode feature is also accompanied by powerful specs such as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 octa-core chipset, an Adreno 512 GPU, and spacious 6GB RAM which allows for an ultra-smooth and uninterrupted gaming experience.

Edward, a self-confessed game geek, is thrilled over the Vivo V11’s superb Game Mode feature

Maymay, enjoys the Vivo V11’s impressive AI camera. Whether she is on set or simply having fun with friends and family, Maymay can take photos with ease anytime, anywhere. “Iyong pinaka-gusto ko iyong mga effects at saka sobrang ganda talaga ng selfie camera niya kasi 25MP siya eh,” Maymay shared. “Sobrang love ko talaga ang camera ng Vivo V11.”

The main camera sports a large f/1.8 aperture and a 1.28m pixels, a powerful combination that boosts photosensitivity in both back or low light. With these powerful features, it is possible to produce images that are vivid, rich, and sharp even in the most challenging lighting conditions. Moreover, shots taken in daylight are almost life-like, with bright colors that pop out.

The Vivo V11 also has an improved AI Selfie Lighting feature that offers two more lighting options such as Loop Light and Rainbow Light. The Rainbow Light adds sunrays to a photo while the Loop Light blurs the subject’s background to make him or her stand out.

Vivo’s latest flagship is also equipped with the AI Face Shaping technology. It is an AI face-modelling algorithm that allows users to enhance the structure of their face while taking a selfie. This feature enables the camera to analyze 2D images and recreate a 3D model to beautify a selfie naturally.

The Vivo V11 also sports the AI Beauty Feature which helps produce nothing but magazine spread-like shots and an AI Portrait Mode which allows the camera to focus on the subject while beautifully blurring out the background.

Mr World Philippines 2018 Top 8 Hot Picks

In a few hours four of the 16 gorgeous and dashing male competing in the Mr World Philippines 2018 is about to be crowned as Mr Eco Philippines, Mr Multinational Philippines, Mr Supranational Philippines and of course the top title of Mr World Philippines 2018 that will represent the country in the pageant that will also be held here this 2019.

This is the first time I will be making a hot pick for a male pageant and my criteria will be different from the female pageant, my basis is first the over all look (that includes the face, the body, the appeal and charm of course), next is based on personality (this was based on the events where I met and saw them i.e. the Press Presentation and the Talent Competition), and last is based on my observation on how they are eager to win in the competition.

The 8 Hot picks are placed according to their numbers as candidates.

#2. Denver Hernandez: Denver is 24 years old and stands at around 5'10, he grew up in Italy, but was born in Malvar, Batangas. Denver is relatively not new to pageants as we already saw him joined an International Pageant and a local modeling search for a food brand.

Why I picked him? Because Denver has this charm that is simply irresistible, he might look snob but this dude got the looks, the charm, though he is somewhat shy but I believe once on stage he will slay it there.
_______________________________

#4 Robin Hanrath: The Filipino-Dutch Robin is 20 years old and currently living in Laguna where he is the reigning Ginoong Laguna, he is currently taking up Agriculture in UP Los Banos.

I picked him in my top 8 its because of his good looks, to be very honest he is one of the best looking guys in the competition he has this boy next door appeal, he is a character and he plays with it specially on stage.
_______________________________

#7 Adbullah Cheng: Abdullah is one of the quiet guys in the press presentation, but as I observe him he is like a butterfly that is getting out of his cocoon, he just keeps on improving every time I see him.

By the way he is a Dean's Lister in FEU taking up Mechanical Engineering, this guy is ready to surprise us in the competition night, he is the dark horse in the competition.
_______________________________

#8 Marco Poli: Marco is everyone's favorite to win the crown, he got all the qualities of a winner, he is tall at around 6'4, got those six pack abs, good looking and very manly face, he can also converse exquisitely everything we are looking for is apparently in him that's why he is in my Top 8.

Marco is also an athlete, he played for a team in the United Football League, he is also a ramp model.

______________________________

#10 Ricardo De Jesus: Would you believe if I tell you that this guy is already in his 30? well yes he is and I really thought that he was just in his mid 20's, anyway Ricardo got a really strong persona and with his stance and form that emanates masculinity, I must say that age is just a number and he deserves a title.

Ricardo is a manager for a local internet service provider and currently taking his MBA in Ateneo.

______________________________

#11 Wilfred Placencia: Another pageant veteran, I picked him mainly because he can speak for himself, he can fire up a conversation, he got a well chiseled body, and his will to win is just too high that you know he wants it badly and that's what I call fighting spirit.

______________________________

#12  Joshua Banatin: He was a National Pageant title holder last year and he bravely joined MrWP this year, comparing him to other candidates I must say Joshua isn't the strongest candidate, but I guess he is one of the candidates who can recreate himself, the one who can show different sides of him as a candidate and I guess that's one advantage of him over other candidates that's why I chose him.

Jessica Sanchez holds a one night concert at the Theatre in Solaire this November 10

A big voice in her own right, Jessica Sanchez is back to perform with an edgier look and a sound that is her own. Catch up with the powerhouse voice on November 10, 2018 in her self-entitled concert “Jessica Sanchez with special guest Martin Nievera” happening at The Theatre at Solaire.

Jessica Sanchez’s story is one that begins when a shy 16-year old girl dominated the stage with a voice that can go head-to-head with some of history’s icons. It may seem like she was dealt a lucky card, but behind the curtains, it couldn’t be anywhere near the truth. “I was so young when American Idol happened,” she says. “I learned so much from the show, the people, and the experience afterwards. It prepared me for what was to come, the constant hustle and hard work.”

Born from immigrant parents who have established their lives in the United States and being in one of the world’s most watched singing competitions, one would hear many Filipinos say Jessica Sanchez was living the American dream. Some argued, however, that she was too American to be celebrated by Filipinos, adding the fact that she has never set foot in the Philippines prior her AI stint. But it was this opportunity that helped her touch base with a part of her identity that she has yet to fully discover. “My first time being in the Philippines was for the Idol tour. I was so excited for my first trip to my mom’s homeland. It all happened so fast, but I remember it being full of amazing food, amazing people and amazing moments.” Jessica recalls.

The impact of the memories has not evaded her. In the years that followed, the Philippines saw Jessica perform on local television programs, radio shows, and held a concert for her freshman album. Her constant appearance has prompted most to wonder whether she will be back again, or maybe stay for good. Although with no certainty just yet, Jessica shares, “I try to visit at least once a year. I’m half-Filipino so I’m always wanting to learn and experience more of the culture.”

Contrary to stated prejudices, Jessica is more Filipino than meets the eye. Just like other Filipinos who quest for greener pastures under the star-spangled flag, she also fell prey to the unforgiving eyes of those who saw her as an outsider, sticking out amid fair skin, corn-hued hair and colored sights. Despite the fragility that her youth has handed, her voice set her apart – a voice that commands and resists to be contained. And just as what her Pinoy compatriots do best, she persisted with an awakened innate resiliency - a Filipino quality that ultimately shaped her. She says that times have changed, and minds are more open, especially in the business of entertainment. Truly, Hollywood has seen an influx of Filipino heritage gracing its regal red carpets. Apl de Ap of the popular group Black Eyed Peas – someone who Jessica considers as a friend – is one that has made a dent in the once highly exclusive music industry, and has at the same time, continued to wave the three stars and the sun. “It’s been harder in the past for Asian Americans to make a name in the industry, but I feel that now, it isn’t impossible.”

Believing that Filipino talent knows no impossibilities, Solaire’s Director for Entertainment Audie Gemora shares what’s special about this concert, “We were all witness to how Jessica rose above every challenge she had to face in the cutthroat Hollywood scene. Although she has found her footing in the United States, this concert will represent rediscovering her Filipino roots and bringing her beloved Filipino fans with her in that journey. The night’s performances will speak of every Filipino artist’s hustle that each must go through to make it in the music industry, and more importantly, the potential to become a global sensation.”

Now 23, Jessica has kept the momentum going, but at her own pace, “These past years have been filled with traveling internationally for events, concerts, and recordings, but I’ve also taken some time to step back and find myself as an artist.”

Her upcoming concert will show her evolution and versatility as an artist with songs that are deemed as Filipino favorites such as “I Will Always Love You”, "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" and “I Have Nothing”, which are coincidentally, among her Idol performance repertoire. This night will also see a new Jessica that’s bolder and grittier as she sings R&B songs alike that speak of her edge and vibrancy.

It has been seven years since her almost-victory. Bitter-sweet as it may sound, Jessica still feels blessed. “I am able to live my life doing what I love. I was given a platform on Idol when I was 16 and have accomplished things I’ve dreamed of, “ she says.

Even with the dominant Western look and feel brought by the land that cradled her, she continues to beat blood in her veins that epitomizes what the Filipino talent can reach and the kind of stage that it deserves.
