Children of the River

In today’s cinema landscape of romantic comedies, horror flicks and dramatic pictures, one genre seems to have been overlooked: children’s films. Fewer and fewer movies seem to be made for the education, development and entertainment of kids.

Spears Films, the production arm of Spears Activation and PR, puts children’s films in the spotlight with Children of the River, one of full-length features in competition at the 15th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. This year’s edition of the prestigious Filipino independent filmfest runs from August 2 to 13 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines; and in the following cinemaas: Glorietta, Greenbelt, Trinoma, Market Market, UP Town Center in Metro Manila; Abreeza in Davao, and in Evia cinemas in Pampanga, Naga and Iloilo.

Written and directed by Maricel Cariaga (filmmaker behind the TOFARM film Pitong Kabang Palay, and the Sinag Maynila 2017 Best Documentary Journeyman Finds Home: The Simone Rota Story), the coming-of-age Children of the River tells the story of young Elias whose life with his three best friends becomes more exciting when a certain Ted vacations in their provincial town. Their eagerness then turns into dread when they receive news about their fathers who are soldiers stationed in Mindanao.

Cinemalaya 2017 Best Actor Noel Comia, Jr., who plays Elias, headlines the cast composed of GMA heartthrob Juancho Trivino as Ted, Kapuso actress Rich Asuncion as Elias’ mom, Elvy, with Ricky Oriarte, Dave Justine Francis, Junyka Santarin and JR Custodio. Award-winning actor Jay Manalo plays a very special role.

Maricel reveals that the idea for Children of the River came about because of the Marawi siege in 2017. She explains, “But instead of writing about soldiers and their battles, I went ahead and wrote about the stories of their families. When your family member is fighting in a war and you know that any time, you may get a call that something has happened to your loved one, how do you live your life? How can you manage to live everyday knowing your loved one may die any time?... So, Children of the River is a story of four friends trying to live a normal life while battling their own demons and while their fathers are fighting in a pointless war.”

Children of the River is the fifth children’s film that Spears Films’ executive producer Albert Almendralejo has produced. His advocacy began in 2009 with Bakal Boys (Children Metal Drivers), a heart-tugging docu-drama about kids who scavenge for scraps. Bakal Boys reaped acclaim in various local and international filmfests; it also won the NETPAC Prize at the 2009 Cinemalaya.

Spears Films would make three more after that: the documentary on young Filipino footballers who trained in the U.K., entitled Little Azkals; the thriller on human trafficking through teenage labor entitled Tumbang Preso; and the documentary on Azkals football player Simone Rota’s search for his biological mother entitled Journeyman Finds Home.

“These are films about young people and how to improve their well being,” remarks Albert. While he also desires to produce different types of films (Spears Films is one of the producers of another Cinemalaya film, the sexy romance Malamaya,), Albert will always strive to create material for and about children.

Children of the River is a co-production of Spears Films with GMA Films and Luna Studios. For updates, visit Children of the River – Cinemalaya page and Spears Activation & PR page on Facebook. For screening schedules, visit cinemalaya.org.

GMA Network receives Diamond Creator Award for reaching 10 million YouTube subscribers

GMA Network receives Diamond Creator Award for reaching 10 million YouTube subscribers

Leading media conglomerate GMA Network celebrates another milestone as the GMA Entertainment channel recently surpassed 10 million subscribers on YouTube, thus joining an elite group of content creators in Southeast Asia that have also achieved such a feat.

With this accomplishment, the Network formally received on July 23 the Diamond Creator Award, a recognition given by YouTube to content creators that have reached 10 million subscribers. Present in the ceremonial turnover were GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon; President and COO Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr.; Executive Committee Vice Chairman Joel G. Jimenez; Executive Vice President and CFO Felipe S. Yalong; GMA New Media, Inc. (NMI) President and COO Judd Gallares; and GMA NMI Senior Vice President and General Manager Dennis Caharian. The Diamond Play Button was awarded by YouTube’s Southeast Asia Director of Content Partnerships and Business Development Vishal Sarin, and Content Partnerships Philippines Country Lead Pablo Mendoza.

Through NMI, the Network’s technology arm, GMA forged a partnership with YouTube dubbed the YouTube Player for Publishers (“YT PfP”) in mid-2017 that has enabled viewers everywhere to watch official, full episodes of GMA programs online. The partnership not only supports the anti-piracy efforts of GMA Network, but more significantly addresses the millennial video viewing habits that demand access to premium content when they want, wherever they may be. The YT PfP partnership was an enabler for GMA as it aided strategy for boosting YouTube views and hastening the acquisition of subscribers. It also allowed for a more robust content archive that used to only house show highlights, recaps, behind-the-scene videos, among others.

From only 1.6 million subscribers at the start of the YT PfP agreement in June 2017, this soared past 10 million in May this year. As of December 2018, the GMA Network YouTube channel’s rank improved from being in the Top 200 in 2017 to being among the Top 50 worldwide.

“We are very gratified that GMA has reached quite an achievement and it is translated into about four times growth [in watch time] year-on-year so that’s enough reason for us to be really happy. This is the work of many people and they are all here as we receive this Diamond Creator Award,” said Gozon.

Meanwhile, YouTube’s Sarin said, “We congratulate GMA for growing their channel to more than 10 million subscribers. This is a great milestone as there are only five media networks in Southeast Asia that have received the Diamond Creator Award and GMA is one of them.”

Of the achievement, Gallares shared, “Our mandate is to lead GMA’s transformation from a media and entertainment giant into a dominant multi-platform content provider worldwide. YouTube has in recent years been a strategic ally in this regard, as it has not only helped us expand GMA’s online footprint but it has also been key to building preference for the GMA brand. This recognition affirms that we are on track.”

Caharian further added that they were just showcasing the output of GMA Entertainment and how they help in making sure that their content can also be discovered online. “At the end of the day, what attracts a lot of viewers is still the quality of the content, so congratulations to GMA Entertainment. We’d also like to thank the viewers for their support, and we’d like them to know that many projects are in the pipeline for more viewing fun.”

Since its launch in November 2006, the GMA Entertainment channel now has 11.8 billion lifetime views. Total subscribers are currently at 11.1 million, a million more in a span of less than three months.

Other Kapuso YouTube channels include GMA News for daily video clips from the Network’s news programs, now with 4.1 million subscribers; GMA Public Affairs for documentaries, docudrama, and news magazine shows, now with 6.1 million subscribers; GMA Playlist for heartfelt song renditions from various Kapuso stars; GMA Playground for some of the Network’s child-friendly programs; and GMA Regional TV for the top stories from the regions.

Reddoorz makes traveling fun, easy and oh-so-affordable

Reddoorz makes traveling fun, easy and oh-so-affordable
Reddoorz climbs to the top of travel apps in PH

Current trends in traveling have drastically changed over the years. More and more people are looking for ways to start an adventure without having to shell out a lot of money to visit beaches, tourist spots, and other cultural landmarks, be it in the outskirts of the Philippines or in international territories.
One way to ride the wave of the travel boom is to look for affordable airfare and budget-friendly hotels.
Thankfully, Reddoorz, the hotel management and booking platform, has opened up opportunities for both local travelers and foreign tourists to find and live in comfortable, well-appointed hotels that cost only a fraction of the cost of five-star hotels.
The Reddoorz travel app – downloadable on the Google Play Store and App Store – has helped drive the travel fever, putting booking and access to affordable accommodations all over the Philippines at one’s fingertips. The Reddoorz app has consistently placed among the top 5 travel apps of choice, but climbed to Number 1 as of July 24, 2019.
With the help of the app and avid consumer usage, RedDoorz has enlivened the travel scene, accommodating tourists and travelers in over 150 affordable accommodations in over 10 cities in the Philippines. Reddoorz hotels can be found in the busy streets of Metro Manila, Cebu, and Pampanga to bustling tourist spots like Tagaytay and Davao,. The technology-driven company has caught the attention of travel-hungry people who are always on-the-go, letting them know that there is a best quality affordable hotel available at practically any time of the year, letting them save money as they experience big adventures. No need to postpone travel plans until after the usually big amount allocated for travel has been saved or earned.
It’s a “fly now, pay now” experience with Reddoorz. Lodging costs are so affordable, anyone can travel every time the travel bug bites. Furthermore, travelers will be able to allocate a portion of their money for other things like food, transportation, pasalubongs, and fun activities instead of spending a big chunk of the budget on lodging. The good news is, today’s budget hotels place a premium on comfort and convenience as well.
To make sure that not only tourists benefit, but the whole hotel industry as well, RedDoorz has partnered with smaller hotels and apartelles in various cities and key provinces to perk up the tourist activity in more locations.
So now, if the impulse hits to watch and swim with the whale sharks in Cebu, bask in the beaches of Palawan, see the century-old Spanish churches and houses in Iloilo, grab a bite of the famous Chicken Inasal in Bacolod, embark on a food trip in Pampanga, feel the cold air of the City of Pines or Tagaytay, or simply hang out in Manila, there’s always a range of properties to choose from to turn all that into reality. The Reddoorz App makes all that happen right when it’s wanted in the easiest possible way. Just choose the destination, find the Reddoorz hotel there and start packing.
Now crossing out target destinations from one’s bucket list is easy as pie.

Freaks

TBA STUDIOS TO RELEASE EXCITING AWARD-WINNING HOLLYWOOD THRILLER ‘FREAKS’

How far would you go to protect your daughter? And at what cost?

In the sci-fi thriller Freaks, seven-year-old Chloe (played by young actress Lexy Kolker) lives her life forbidden by her father (played by Into The Wild’s Emile Hirsch) to leave their house. Her father claims there is danger lurking outside and he is only protecting her from harm.

But something does not feel right. And the presence of an ice cream salesman (played by Academy Award for Best Actor nominee Bruce Dern) with his alluring Mr. Snowcone ice cream truck in front of their house makes Chloe believe that her father may not be telling her the truth. Mr. Snowcone explains to the Chloe to the existence of “Freaks” — people who are classified as dangerous and illegal.

Is Chloe’s father really protecting her from harm? Is evil closer and bigger than Chloe could ever realize?

Freaks is a highly acclaimed film that is described as critics and viewers alike as a “genre-bending” feature that will appeal to fans of thrillers looking to be shocked and surprised in the theaters. It is also a treat for viewers who want to dissect their movies and TV shows like puzzles so they can solve the mystery before the film reveals its mind-boggling twist.

Freaks received a standing ovation during its premiere in the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018 and has garnered positive attention for its directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein (who also wrote the screenplay). The Hollywood Reporter says Freaks is an achievement, a “well-integrated piece” both narratively and visually. It has since screened and won awards in other prestigious film festival such as the Vancouver International Film Festival (where Lipovsky and Stein won the BC Emerging Filmmaker award) and the Paris International Fantastic Film Festival (where it was given the Best Feature Film Award). It also won nods at the Triste Science+Fiction Festival and the Utopiales: The Nantes International Science Fiction Film Festival.

It also boasts of an impressive cast. Besides Hirsch and Dern, Freaks also stars Grace Park (TV’s Battlestar Galactica and Hawaii Five-0) and Amanda Crew (HBO’s Silicon Valley). The Hollywood Reporter praises the movie’s “tight-knit ensemble” and singles out young Kolker’s performance as the “feisty little girl determined to protect her family.” “Her semi-improvised performance couldn’t be any more authentic and she’s well matched with Hirsch, drawing on his own parental experience, as her conflicted and overprotective father. The ever-versatile Dern delivers a slyly subversive turn as Mr. Snowcone, whose hidden agenda involves much more than frozen treats,” it adds.

All of these achievements made io9 declare that Freaks is a “wonderful, exciting film.” “Stein and Lipovsky stuff Freaks with limitless imagination, finding ways to execute their loftier ambitions. It’s a film filled with complex, robust ideas that not only have a unique twist to them but a realistic grounding that makes them more relatable and impactful.”

The movie, to be released in the United States by WellGo USA, is written and directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein.

“Freaks” is distributed locally by TBA Studios. It will open in Philippines theaters on August 23, 2019.
