Fate brings Adrian Lindayag & Keann Johnson together in “The Boy Foretold By The Stars”

Adrian Lindayag and Keann Johnson, two of the most talented rising stars in the country today, play the leads in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2020 romantic comedy “The Boy Foretold By The Stars.”

Adrian is a stage performer who was a mainstay of the iconic late night variety show “Walang Tulugan” hosted and produced by the renowned German “Kuya Germs” Moreno. Among Adrian’s notable projects include ABS-CBN’s top-rating afternoon teleserye “Kadenang Ginto” and the blockbuster stage musical “Rak of Aegis.” Currently, Adrian can be seen in the TV 5 sitcom “Oh My Dad” with Ian Veneracion and Dimples Romana.

Keann, meanwhile, is a model who has appeared in commercials and TV shows.

Adrian and Keann get the biggest breaks of their careers in “The Boy Foretold By The Stars” produced by Clever Minds, Inc. of actress Jodi Sta. Maria and her partners, The Dolly Collection and Brainstormers Lab. In this feature directorial debut of writer-director Dolly Dulu, Keann and Adrian play Luke and Dominic, respectively — both students at an exclusive boys’ school.

“Luke is an athletic, boy-next-door, introverted type of guy,” Keann says of his role. “He’s very mysterious. Once you get to know him, you’ll end up falling in love with him.”

Adrian discloses that his character Dominic is outgoing and studious.  He says, “Dominic is a senior high school student. He is an achiever. He is a student leader. Very logical ang personality niya. Straight ‘A’ student. Ambitious siya.”

Luke and Dominic develop a special relationship after meeting at a school retreat called Journey With The Lord.

Fans of the boys love (BL) and rom-com genres will be happy to know that “The Boy Foretold By The Stars” has a lot to offer: a kilig story with a heartwarming message, moving performances of the good-looking cast and topnotch production values. “Our movie was shot and created even before the recent BL hype,” says Adrian. “Nakunan namin siya at natapos before the pandemic. Kaya sobra naming swerte wala kaming restricitons. Ang dami naming talents. Pwede kaming mag-shoot kahit saan.”

The rom-com features big scenes and breathtaking locations, one of which was a scene shot in a field filled with numerous lights. “The mounting, the quality of our film… it’s really a visual treat,” says Direk Dolly.

It’s really a big film with an important message, says co-producer Derrick Cabrido of Clever Minds, Inc. “Noong napunta sa amin ang materyal na ito, almost tapos na ang pelikula. When we saw the material, we already saw yung potential ng product…. Sa dami ng nangyari sa atin this year, we deserve a movie like ‘The Boy Foretold by the Stars’ na light and we can learn from.”

“The Boy Foretold By The Stars” won 3 awards, including 2nd Best Picture, at the recently concluded Metro Manila Film Festival 2020 Gabi ng Parangal.

Enter the World of The Missing with Direk Easy Ferrer.

Traditionally the Metro Manila Film Festival always feature the signature horror movies of Regal Films and for the 2020 edition of the Film Festival, Regal is offering a different kind of horror in The Missing.

Set in Saga, Japan. The island capital of the Saga Prefecture will be the center of the story of the three main character played by Ritz Azul, Miles Ocampo, and Joseph Marco.

The Missing will also be the debut of director Easy Ferrer in both the MMFF and in the horror genre, Easy is known for his work in Finding You and in the recently concluded Ben X Jim as the director, and his other works as a writer.

This December 25, enter the world of The Missing.

1. Direk tell us something about “The Missing”.

The Missing is Regal Entertainments latest horror presentation. It was shot in the autumn of 2019 in Karatsu and Imari in Saga Prefecture Japan. It stars Joseph Marco, Miles Ocampo, and Ritz Azul.

2. Direk what’s your inspiration in writing/doing “The Missing”?

Originally, when it was written in 2013, it was set in the Philippines, taking inspiration from the cases of missing journalists and other victims of extra judicial killings, but its mainly derived from the Ampatuan massacre. It takes on the premise of what if, something horrible is buried beneath a building you are forced to live in.

3. This is your first time doing a horror movie, how different is your approach in this genre?

The difficult thing about horror is it has to be precise. One little adjustment in one unit of the story will affect its entirety. It should be perfect timing, and perfect setting of mood. I tried to incorporate J-Horror sensibilities at the same time putting in superstitious beliefs common in Japan and the Philippines, such as offering blood in places of constructions like bridges and dam. This is actually the movie I really Worked hard on story boarding so I won’t make a mistake.

4. You've shot the movie in Japan, how was it shooting there? What were the challenges you’ve faced while shooting the movie?

What we loved in there are the respectful people. They respect that you are there to work, and they won’t disturb you. They are very cooperative as well. They won’t take monetary payment for using their spaces, simple tokens of thankfulness are enough. Of course, the challenge of shooting overseas, especially horror, is you have to be very very resourceful, as there is limited supply and haggling in a foreign land is difficult.  But everything worked out fine because the entire production is hardworking. We had so much fun shooting there actually.

5. The film really looks like a Japanese Horror movie, how would you compare the Japanese Horror movies with the Filipino one (Since regal films is known for their horror movies).

Japanese horror movies are deeply rooted in folklore and bizarre. It capitalizes on mood, and it plays on eerie ness of everyday situations. Main characters doesn’t have to be active in a specific goal, but just normal people living their everyday lives who one day experience haunting or horror. Filipino movies are different in such that characters here are more goal driven, such that they disturb peace or they made an imbalance in a once undisturbed paranormal being, that’s why horror happens

6. Were Ritz Azul, Miles Ocampo, and Joseph Marco your first choice as actors? And can you introduce us their characters?

Yes they are my first choice. Ritz Azul plays Iris Valerio, a restoration architecture. She restores old buildings to bring back their original form. She has post traumatic stress disorder because of an incident that happened to her sister. In the present time, she trying to heal from it, by trying to live her life as normal as possible. Joseph Marco is Job Arca, also an architect, and Iris’ former lover. He now lives in Saga, and he’s the one who invited iris to restore the ancestral house of their former Japanese professor, who he is deeply indebted to. Miles Ocampo is Len Santos, an intern who may have or have not any connection with the hauntings in the house.

7. Before “The Missing” you’ve done several remarkable projects with Regal as both writer and director, do you feel any pressure? since this is also your first time in the MMFF.

There is tremendous pressure for me, since Regal is known for having the library of the most iconic horror movies. I was under the expectation of keeping up to it, that’s why I try to give my best. Plus the fact that it’s gonna be done online, i had to make sure it will be worth the people’s time and money during this holiday in the new normal world.

8. What are you feeling now that finally after a long delay, The Missing is finally coming not on cinema, but instead it will be Streaming on Christmas day?

I’m excited and optimistic about the whole scenario. I believe the Philippine cinema is entering a new era, and setting a new viewing habit to the audience. I’m really overwhelmed that I am part of this amazing transition.

Tickets are now available for The Missing, log on to upstream.ph/mmff for more details on how to purchase the tickets. The MMFF 2020 will stream from December 25 to January 7 only.

FDCP's Film Philippines Junmpstarts 2021 with New Movie Incentives.

In order to support partnerships between the Philippines and fellow member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) through its FilmPhilippines Office (FPO) has launched the ASEAN Co-production Fund (ACOF).

The ACOF is a selective fund that will support every selected project with up to USD 150,000 (approximately PHP 7.2 million), provided that the co-production involves a Philippine company registered with the FDCP’s National Registry and at least one company from an ASEAN country such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Cambodia.

The ACOF, which will select up to two projects per cycle, will have three cycles in 2021:

  • 1st Application Period - January 4 to March 31, with Selection Committee deliberations in April

  • 2nd Application Period - May 3 to July 30, with Selection Committee deliberations in August

  • 3rd Application Period - September 1 to November 29, with Selection Committee deliberations in December

Eligible projects are feature films of more than 80 minutes with a director of ASEAN nationality minority or majority co-producing with the Philippines. They must have a distribution guarantee or deal memorandum for a theatrical or video-on-demand (VOD) release in the Philippines or for a minority Filipino co-production, a distribution guarantee for a theatrical/VOD release in the country of origin. As for the ACOF spending, at least 50 percent of the fund must be spent in the Philippines in accordance with Qualifying Philippine Production Expenses (QPPE).

A project is considered ineligible if it has received or solicited another grant from the FDCP such as the Film Location Incentive Program (FLIP) or International Co-production Fund (ICOF). Additionally, the project must apply for the first time to ACOF.

ACOF 2021 Cycle 1 Art Card.JPG

Projects will be evaluated on the following:

  • Degree to which the work promotes ASEAN culture and territory

  • Degree to which the work contributes to the ASEAN film industry

  • Degree to which a Filipino producer participates in the creative production of the work

  • Global quality of the project

  • Financial strength and stability of the project

  • International distribution potential through film festivals, theatrical/VOD release, and platforms in order to reach international audiences

The latest FilmPhilippines incentive program also aims to enhance the Filipino cast and crew, encourage the ASEAN film industry to thrive in global film markets and festivals, and promote the Philippines as a filming destination with a one-stop-shop services desk for film and television productions in the country.

In fact, an application to the ACOF automatically entitles the applicant to avail of the FilmPhilippines’ Film Location Engagement Desk (FLEX) that taps into the FDCP’s inter-agency government support network to help foreign and local audiovisual projects aiming to work in the Philippines with securing visas, work permits, location permits, partnerships with local crew and production companies, and other production logistics requirements.

Applicant producers are advised to contact the FPO before their productions commence to discuss their projects and explore details surrounding the ACOF. For more information, visit www.filmphilippines.com or e-mail filmphilippines@fdcp.ph
