The San Beda Red Cubs survived the dethronement mounted by the Malayan Red Cubs after they escaped past 82-78 to force a game three this Friday.
The Red Cubs started the game on a high note taking the lead early in the opening period at 14-10, but the aggressiveness of Malayan was their biggest advantage in this game as they quickly snatched the lead at 18-16 to end the quarter.
San Beda again got first on the score board as they tied the game at 18 and eventually over take the Red Robins, but the gritty young guns of Malayan were just into the game taking a 12-0 run to pin down the Red Cubs at 41-29.
Entering the second half it was San Beda's turn to make runs of their own to trim down the lead of the Red Robins and eventually tying the game at 50. The Red Cubs were able to take the lead 65-62 to end the third period against Malayan.
The Red Robins were able to regain the lead at 75-70 entering the mid part of the final period, but San Beda held on to the game and started to make a comeback after a back to back baskets from Carlo Obenza and Germy Mahinay that tied the game at 75 with 2:03 remaining in the game.
Bryan Lacap almost sealed the game for Malayan, giving them a 78-77 lead with lead with 1:17 on the clock, but Carlo Obenza of San Beda was able to make a basket giving a 79-78 lead with 40 seconds left. Romuel Junsay tried to give the Red Robins the win, but he failed twice as San Beda was able to survive the game to live another day.
Carlo Obenza led the Red Cubs with 19 points, followed by Robi Nayve and Germy Mahinay with 14 and 13 points respectively. Romuel Junsay led the side of Malayan with 23 points, Jasper Salenga added 15 points, and Warren Bonifacio had a double-double performance, having 12 points and 14 rebounds.
