#UAAPLXXIX Day 26: Ateneo Takes Second Spot, FEU Falls To Third


The Ateneo Blue Eagles takes over the second spot of the standings after they ended UST's season 79 campaign with a 74-64.

The first half went stiff between the Blue Eagles and the Growling Tigers, with Ateneo taking a 16-15 lead in the first period and extending it to a 38-36 lead at the end of the first half.

Going to the second half Ateneo was able to keep the Tigers chasing as they take a 58-53 lead at the end of the third. In the final period the Blue Eagles were able to establish a more comfortable cushion against UST to secure the win.

Isaac Go stepped up for the blue shirts, scoring 15 points, Mike Nieto added 13 points, and Vince Tolentino had 11 markers for Ateneo. Meanwhile, Louie Vigil was the lone bright spot for the Tigers having 14 points.

The FEU Tamaraws falter for the third straight time after they came back from a two week holiday break, but this time it was a heart breaker not only because it was a come from behind 67-73 victory by La Salle, but also the Tamaraws are now in danger of losing the chance to get a twice to beat advantage against Ateneo who won earlier against UST. 

The game started tight for both teams ending the first period tied at 13. Going to the second period the Tamaraws took over the driver seat taking a 35-32 lead at the end of the first half. In the third period it became a seesaw battle between FEU and La Salle as both squads exchange turns in getting the lead though the Tamaraws were still able to take the lead at he end of the quarter at 53-51.

In the final period the Tamaraws are looking to seal the victory on their side, but series of unfortunate turnovers happened as they entered the final two minutes of the game. The Tamaraws were stuck in the 67 point mark, while La Salle is slowly making a comeback. FEU was just minutes from disaster as their ace guard Joe Trinidad commits as costly error that gave the Green Archers their 13th victory. 

Despite the costly error, Joe Trinidad was the second leading scorer for the Tamaraws in this game having 16 points, he is 5 out of 7 in the three point area. meanwhile Axel Iñigo topped the scoring for FEU having 18 points and 8 rebounds. 

On the Side of La Salle, Jeron Teng, Ben Mbala, Kib Montalbo, and Aljun Melecion combined a total of 55 points for the Green Archers.

FEU will face the UE Red Warriors this Wednesday, 2pm, at the Mall of Asia Arena to wrap off the elimination rounds.
