iPhone 12: More upgrades, but do you need an upgrade?

Apple has announced their much awaited iPhone 12 series in their Apple Event earlier today (October 14, 1am, Manila Time) and they did not just announced two or three new phones cause they revealed 4 new iPhone 12 in that 1 hour virtual event led by Apple CEO, Tim Cook.

We'll break down the features of the iPhone 12 family below let's start off with the;

Screen:

The regular iPhone 12 and 12 pro both features a 6.1 inch super retina OLED display, the 12 Pro Max got a bigger 6.7 inch super retina OLED display, while the iPhone 12 Mini got a more compact 5.4 inch Super Retina OLED display.

If you are going to ask if the new iPhones does have a 120hz refresh rate, sadly there's none. Although Apple promised that they still offer the best viewing experience on a smartphone.

Build:

Apple trimmed down the curvy built of the iPhone 11 and made it more flat in the iPhone 12, to trim down the size of the phone, it actually looked like a bigger iPhone 5 from the yester years.

The iPhone 12 also now features a more sturdy ceramic shield that made it more durable and less breakable if you accidentally drop it, it's also IP68 rated that it can resist water for up to 30 minutes.

Camera:

The new iPhones features a 12 megapixel wide main camera, 12 megapixel ultra wide camera, and a 12 megapixel telephoto lens. A 12 megapixel front facing camera is also featured on all models.

The newest addition to the camera module is the new TOF 3D LiDAR scanner that boosts the capability of the cameras at night and best for AI integration.

Processor/Memory:

A more powerful A14 Bionic chipset powers the iPhone 12, it improves the gaming capability of the iPhone to run high graphics and high powered games such as League of Legends.

The new A14 Bionic chip also improves the computational photography on the cameras of the new iPhone, making it more superior whether in taking photos or shooting videos with high quality output.

They also doubled iPhone's base unit to 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.

Power:

The rumors were confirmed that the iPhone will no longer include a power brick on their iPhone's packaging, although they will still provide a Lighting to USB C cable Apple wanted their users to utilize the use of Wireless Charging with their MagSafe feature (remember your magnetic Magsafe charger on your old Macbooks).

This is kinda weird, but in that 1 hour keynote the battery of the iPhone 12 series wasn't discussed thoroughly.

I checked out the battery life on stand by of the iPhone 12 mini and it promised 15 hours, the 12 is the same as the 11 with 17 hours, the 12 pro lags behind the 11 pro's 18 hours as it will only last 17 hours on stand by, and the 12 pro max is at 20 hours as well as the 11 pro max.

These stand by results may vary because the 12 series is already 5G ready.

Maybe this is also the reason why Apple didn't push through with the 120 hz refresh rate on their display as it will eat up more power from the battery.

Pricing/Availability:

The iPhone 12 starts at $699, while the 12 Pro starts at $999. Same pricing as the iPhone 11 when it was launched last year, but the iPhone 12 series will not come with a free wired headphones and power brick (Coz Apple said they want to lessen the carbon footprints of their devices that's why they removed it).

The 12 comes with Green, Black, White, Product Red, and Blue, the 12 pros comes in Silver, Graphite, Gold and the new Pacific Blue.

Pre order starts on October 16 for the iPhone 12, October 23 for the 12 Pro, the 12 mini is on November 6, and November 13 for the 12 Pro Max.

It will surely come to both Globe and Smart this November.
