Vince &
Kath & James 9/10(12/28/16)
Vince &
Kath & James is a modern day retelling of this generations love stories. It
runs in the premise of Vince, Kath, and James’ love triangle affair and their
family struggles, from how Kath met James then suddenly she fell in love with Vince
and because of that conflicts arise as their family problems enters the
picture.
This is
movie is the dark horse of this years’ film festival, why? Because as far as I
know this movie is not really meant for the film festival, it was supposed to
be the November 30 offering of Star Cinema, but things turned around after the
first two entries of SC didn’t made the cut.
Vince &
Kath& James is not the boldest and the bravest of all the movie, it doesn’t
have a complex story, and it only has a simple storyline to follow. But that
simplicity made it more beautiful, fluid, and light. Also even though VKJ is a
formula movie (that has kilig, drama, etc.) it was a well-executed one, you
wouldn’t feel unsatisfied.
Actually of
all of Star Cinema movies this 2016 Vince & Kath & James is a stand
out, aside from a well done storyline it is the first time that they gave a
lead role to newbies after years’.
I commend Julia
Barretto for delivering such a great performance in this movie, I believe she
gave justice to the role of Kath. She has finally probed that she really has a
place in the industry, as she is slowly moving away from the shadows of her surname
and establishing herself.
Joshua
Garcia for me delivers an outstanding performance, he really stood out in this
movie. But there are time he is channeling too much John Lloyd Cruz on his
acting, though it wasn’t bad, it’s just that I sometimes don’t see “Joshua”
instead I am seeing “John Lloyd”. Joshua is slowly becoming the next big thing,
maybe next year he could be a perfect leading man.
For Ronnie
Alonte, I actually didn’t expected so much from him since I know he lacks
experience in acting. There are scenes that shows his inexperience, but I guess
he was able to redeemed his self in the confrontation scene, he was not left
behind even with Joshua’s subtle acting and Julia’s emotional attacks he was
able to level his acting to that of the two.
All in all
the movie was well executed, simplicity is beauty indeed kudos to Direk Ted
Boborol for doing such a remarkable direction for this movie that made it the
best Star Cinema movie this year. I just hope Star Cinema continue this kind of
film making, simple, fluid, and well-executed.
