In the context of election in the Philippines, one must have the capability to launch a nationwide campaign to be called a legit contender for a national position such as the President, Vice President, and Senator. A candidate is allowed to spent maximum of Php 5 for national candidates and with that being said that amount will be multiplied to 55 million registered Filipino voters in the upcoming polls.
If a candidate fails to prove that he or she is capable of providing atleast Php 270 million for campaigning that candidate will end up in the Nuisance list, but should election be money centered? Should a candidate needs to spend that huge amount of money to win the polls?
Looking at the candidates we have today most of them were from powerful clans, political parties, or most of them were already traditional politicians aiming to control the power in this country and what's the sad part of our election system is that we don't really have that much of a choice since going independent will drain all the resources of the candidate or he'll end up as a nuisance.
A few days ago I met this Lawyer who aims to run for a seat in the Senate, his name is Angelo de Alban, he is in his late 30's, I think 36 or 37, he is a graduate of UST and he also teaches law there, looking at him he looks very promising, a worthy of a vote from you people.
But there's one big problem he is facing, he is independent and that means his resources is limited and that is what Comelec is pointing out that's why they considered him a nuisance. but to be very honest at this point in time, election is not only just about posters, print, TV and Radio Ads, there's already what we call Social Media to amplify the reach of a candidate.
Social Media is almost free, well what you need is an internet connection, laptop, and pay ads to boost your posts, and I believe that Social Media is one platform that could lessen the money game in the election.
Coz who would give millions that will not take anything back in return? right?
We already modernized the election system, hopefully we could get over with the traditional politics, let's give chance to people who are willing and capable of running the country.
