#NCAA92 Day 26: JRU Sends CSB Down, EAC Outlast Lyceum, Letran Stop Streaking Stags

The JRU Heavy Bombers are back on the winning column after defeating the struggling and still win less CSB Blazers 71-63. The Heavy Bombers were off to a hot start in this game against the Blazers taking a 19-11 leada early in the opening period, though CSB were able to recover to trim the lead of JRU down 21-16 at the end of the first. 

It was a tight second quarter for both squad with JRU maintaining their lead to end the first half with a 38-33 lead over the Blazers. Going to the second half the Heavy Bombers dropped 24 points in the third quarter to extend their lead up 62-46, but in the fourth period JRU relaxed as they only scored 9 points letting CSB to get close. 

Paolo Pontejos and Abdel Poutouchi both had 14 points for the Heavy Bombers, while Yankie Haruna and Edward Dixon had 14 and 13 points respectively for the Blazers.

The EAC Generals makes it back to back victory after sinking the ship of the Lyceum Pirates 73-66.

The Generals started the game in a dominant fashion taking a 21-8 lead against the Pirates in the first period. going in to the second period the Pirates were able to recover to cut the lead down to 35-24 lead at the end of the first half.

Lyceum continues to get hot in the third period outscoring EAC 23-11 to take over the lead at 47-46 to end the quarter. In the fourth period, Lyceum were able to take an early advantage but the Generals were able to retake the lead and pull away at the latter part of the match.

Hamadou Laminou led the Generals with 20 points and 7 rebounds, Sidney Onwubere had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Francis Munsayac scored 15 points. On the side of Lyceum, Adrian Albana nd Mike Nzeusseu scored 18 and 16 points  respectively,

The defending champions Letran Knights snapped the winning streak of the San Sebastian Stags after defeating them 73-61. The Knights were able to bank in their second quarter performance to escape past the streaking Stags after they ended the first period tied at 15

Rey Nambatac and John Calvo both had 16 points to keep the Final Four chances of the defending champs alive, meanwhile Michael Calisaan and Ryan Costelo topped the scoring for the Stags having 24 points and 12 points.

#UAAPLXXIX Preview: UE Red Warriors

The University of the East failed to enter the final four last season, finishing in sixth with  a 6-8 record. Entering the season 79 with an almost intact line up only losing Chris Javier from last season the Red Warriors are aiming to get back in the Final Four headed by team captain Paul Varilla who average 9.55 points per game and one of UE's most promising stars last season Edison Battiller who average 11.36 points per game.

Returning for his third year as the head coach of the Red Warriors, Coach Derrick Pumaren aims to get UE back on its winning tradition. UE last had a taste of a championship title back in 1985, 2009 was the last time they entered the Finals, and that was also the last time that the Red Warriors entered the final four.

This year the Red Warriors promises to be fiercer and fearless in every game. UE will face the NU Bulldogs in their first game on the 7th of September, 2pm, at the Mall of Asia Arena. Will this year finally be the year that the Red Warriors to return in the final four?

As a Point guard siguro yung Leadership ko sa team at kung paano ko sila seset up sa loob nang court then sabi nga ni coach sakin na wag kong isipin na bata pako or pangalawang taon ko palang sa Team kailangan maging veterans na ko maglaro so kailngan ko talagang maorganize yung team as a point Guard 3.How would you rate UE this season? 10 highest- 1 lowest?.

Strenghts namin siguro yung Quickness namin and ofcourse yung Defense namin dahil lagi ngang sinasabi samin ni coach na yung Defense namin yung mag dedectate ng Offense namin and weakness? Preperation?? Hmm ilang months talaga namin pinaghandaan to eh lalo netong mga last 4 months before UAAP Traiming namin sa Umaga after non nag eextra workout pa kami then ako pag dating ng gabi mag sushooting pako or mag eextra Workout then minsan umuuwi ako samin para din mag shooting and makalaro ko yung 3 kong kapatid na player din and kasabay ko sila magextra. 6. What motivates you/Who inspires you to play basketball?

kapag binabalikan ko yung mga panahon na nag uumpisa pa lang ako kung paano ako naghihirap sa Training and gaano ako kaadik sa basketball and aside from that yung Family ko and yung Team ko syempre minsan kami kami yung nag momotivate sa isat isa. #UAAPLXXIX Preview: UP Fighting Maroons

Last season the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons was expected to be one of the dark horse in the tournament, winning their first two games against UE and then favorites La Salle but as the tournament progresses the Maroons looked like they came in not knowing what they will do next in the tournament resulting for them to drop at the bottom of the standings having a 3-11 record same as Adamson.

Entering this season the Fighting Maroons are still intact with the exception of JR Gallarza and  Agustini Amar who both graduated last season. Coming to this season UP still has the service of their top scorers like Jett Manuel, who averages 11.38ppg, Paul Desiderio with 11ppg, and Diego Dario with 10.15ppg last season.

Season 79 also marks the return of former Rookie of the Year, Kyles Lao, after suffering an ACL injury early last year, Lao is one of the go to guy for UP in season 74 and now that he is back not only scoring will be his contribution, but also leadership.

Another addition to the line up of the Maroons is their only rookie this season, Joaquin Javier Gomez de Liano. Javi is one of the three Gomez De Liano's that played for the UPIS Junior Maroons in the past year, before graduating Javi manages to cap off his High school career with a UAAP Mythical Five award and an MVP Plum in the PCABL.

The Fighting Maroons are also under a new system under their new coach, Coach Bo Perasol. Coach Bo believes that the Maroons will be the dark horse this season looking at the deeper and more experienced players, the Maroons are ready to take the winning path this season.

The Fighting Maroons will face the Adamson Falcons in the opening day of the basketball tournament of #UAAPLXXIX on September 4 at the Araneta Coliseum

#NCAA92 Day 25: Perpetual Help and Mapua Stun Top Seed Foes

The Perpetual Help Altas solidifies their hold on the third spot after their dominant victory over the Arellano Chiefs 76-62. The Altas fuming hot in the first period limiting the Chiefs down a 18-7 output, going into the second period the Chiefs were able to bounce back cutting the lead of the Altas down 35-27 at the end of the first half.

Moving into the second period the Chiefs continue to cut the lead of the Altas down to 54-48 at the end of the third, but in the final period the Altas became unstoppable as the Chiefs struggle to match the shooting of the Altas 22-14 was the output in the final period in favor of Perpetual.

Gab Daganon led the Altas with 22 points and 9 rebounds, followed by Bright Akhuetie with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Daryl Singontiko contributed 13 points and 8 rebounds. On the side of the Chiefs Kent Sallado and Jiovani Jalalon's 22 and 19 point output didn't result to a win for Arellano

The Mapua Cardinals outlasted the San Beda Red Lions after the game went overtime 101-97. The game was tight between the two squad at the start of the game with the Cardinals taking on a slim advantage against the Red Lions as they end the first period 19-17.

A dominant Red Lions Squad roars back at the second period of the game to take over the lead at 43-39 at the end of the first half. In the second half the Red Lions were able to keep their slim advantage and take a 65-60 lead in the third period.

But going to the fourth period Mapua were able to make a comeback and take over the latter part of the period, but San Beda refuses to go home without a fight after a 3 by Arnaud Noah sends the game in overtime. The Cardinals took control early in the overtime period keeping the Red Lions at bay to seal the match in favor of them.

Joseph Erioubu topped the scoring for the Cardinals with 26 points, while CJ Isit added 15 points 8 coming in the overtime period. On the side of the Red Lions Javee Mocon and Robert Bolick had 19 ad 18 points respectively.

#NCAA92 Juniors: 9/1/16

The EAC Brigadiers gets their second victory after foiling the final four dreams of the Lyceum Junior Pirates 78-76. The Junior Pirates were able to open the game strong taking a 17-12 lead in the first period, but going into the second period the Brigadiers outscored the Junior Pirates 22-15 to take the lead 34-32 at the end of the first half.

The Junior Pirates were able to recover in the third period, taking the lead back 56-51, but in the final period the Brigadiers started to pull away, taking a 72-65 lead midway of the final period, though the Junior Pirates were able to closed in at 76-77 with 12 seconds left in the game, the Brigadiers still able to seal the win after a free throw made by Roland Baliquig.

Maui Cruz led the scoring for the Brigadiers producing 20 points and 8 assists, he is followed by Angelo Beduria and Sean Orlondo who scored 14 and 13 points respectively. Mclaude Guadania topped the stats line on the side of the Junior Pirates having 16 points and 7 rebounds, while Vincent Cunanan added 13 points.

The Arellano Braves retains the top spot after defeating the Perpetual Help Junior Altas 92-76.

Even though the Junior Altas were able to begin the match on a high note, taking a 24-19 lead in the first period, they had a hard time in keeping the momentum they earned in the opening period as they went down in the second period scoring only 12 points to let the Braves take the lead at the end of the first half 41-36.

Going into the second half the game started to intensify as it became a neck and neck battle between the two squads with the lead going to the side of the Braves 62-59. The Braves finally break out of the bottleneck battle in the fourth period as they outperformed the Junior Altas 30-17 to secure their win.

Guilmer Dela Torre had a season high 36 points for the Braves, while Aaron Fermin and Carlo Abadeza added 18 points with 12 rebounds and 13 points with 12 rebounds respectively for Arellano. On the side of the Junior Altas, Jielo Razon topped the scorers with 22 points, while Esvin Inliwan added 14 points.

The Greatest Love

After its Twitter-trending teaser trailer earned rave reviews and hundreds of thousands of views online, newest family drama “The Greatest Love” finally comes to television soon on ABS-CBN to tell an unforgettable and extraordinary story of a mother’s selfless love.

Much of the hype and excitement surrounding the series is brought about by its trailer’s heart-rending plot twist: a mother suffering from sudden but profound memory loss that she is unable to recognize her own children fighting in front of her.

The series is led by an ensemble cast composed of veteran actors Sylvia Sanchez, Nonie Buencamino and Rommel Padilla, as well as Dimples Romana, Matt Evans, Arron Villaflor, and Andi Eigenmann.

Sylvia plays the character Gloria, a woman who, throughout her life, has given unconditional love to the people around her.

Through the years, Gloria has become a doting and selfless mother to Amanda (Dimples), Andrei (Matt), Paeng (Arron), and Lizelle (Andi).

However, a long-kept secret will shatter their once happy family, leading Gloria’s children to leave her one by one. As Gloria struggles to keep her family together, she starts to show symptoms of dementia and begins to lose pieces of her memory.

Her mission – to bring back the love her family once had for each other – becomes even more difficult as she races against time and tries to gather her memories before they are completely wiped out.

With scenes set against the picturesque landscapes of Quirino province, “The Greatest Love” is directed by Dado Lumibao and Mervyn Brondial.

According to the series’ creative manager, legendary writer Ricky Lee, “The Greatest Love” is not just about Gloria’s brain condition, but also about the “figurative dementia” of her kids.

“If you come to think of it, Gloria’s children are also suffering from memory problems. They forget that a mother is always going to be a mother. When you have lost in life, when people have forsaken you, when you have nowhere to go, there is that one person you can always run to and who will always accept you no matter – that is your mother,” Ricky said.

“Many children have ‘dementia.’ They don’t remember that their mother loves them very much even when they get reprimanded or if they get separated. In the end, a mother’s love is limitless,” he added.

Is there hope for Gloria to bring her family back together? Will she ever find happiness with the people she loves? Will she completely lose her identity, as well as the secrets she has kept in her heart all these years?

But before showing Gloria’s journey to motherhood, the series retraces her great love story in its first week showing young Gloria (Ellen Adarna) falling in love with boatman Peter (Ejay Falcon) and being forced to marry musician Andres (Junjun Quintana).

Joining the cast of “The Greatest Love” are Tonton Gutierrez, Alec Bovic, at Joshua Garcia.

Adding star power to the series is Megastar Sharon Cuneta, who just recently recorded the official theme song of the series, “The Greatest Love of All, with the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra, marking her first time to record a new version of a song for a teleserye.

#UAAPLXXIX Preview: Adamson University Soaring Falcons

Last season the Adamson Falcons didn't soar high as they landed at the bottom of the standings ending the season at 3-11. The only win they had, was against UP in the first round and against La Salle and UE in the second round.

This season 79 of the UAAP the Adamson Falcons will try to soar high again as they acquired the service of one of the best coaches in the UAAP in the recent decade, no other Coach Franz Pumaren. He is taking over the helm from Coach Mike Fermin that will settle as an assistant coach along with Renren Ritualo.  

One of the major problems that the Falcons faced last year is the lack of seniors and  having more experienced players as they only had foreign reinforcement Pape Sarr leading them in offense and defense averaging 14.93 points per game and 13.43 rebounds per game. Joseph Nallos and Jerome Garcia, who both average 11.92 ppg and 8.69 ppg, respectively came in second and third in scoring for the Falcons, they both graduated last season.

Left behind this season are a bunch of more young falcons eager to take flight for Adamson, one of them is the newly assigned captain of the team, Dawn Hynrich Ochea. Dawn is the only senior player left in the team and now he is in his 4th playing year as a Falcon the 6 feet 2 Cebu native wants to bring his team back to the final four after missing it out in the past seasons.

When asked about how did he adapt in the program of Coach Franz Pumaren, Dawn said "Hindi naman siya bago para sa kin, parang pareho din kay Coach Kenneth (Duremdes) and Coach Mike (Fermin) ng system", he also added that if he will rate the preparedness of Adamson this season he would probably rate it as 10 stating that the team is currently polishing almost all of the flaws of the Falcons last season. 

Regarding their preparations in the upcoming season Dawn shared that they are running most of the time and doing drills that will enhance their core, Regarding the pressure of having a Champion Coach in Coach Franz Dawn said that they know that the bigger pressure is with Coach Franz and that he also instructed them to play for the school and don't mind the pressure at all. 

One word to Describe Adamson this season 79, Dawn said "Motivated". Joining Dawn Ochea in the team are some key retrunees like Pape Sarr and Frederick Tungcab, while key additions like Jerrick Ahamisi, Ralph Chua, James Pasturan, and Terrence Mustre are set to boast the line up of the Falcons this season.

The Adamson Falcons will face the UP Fighting Maroons in the opening day of the #UAAPLXXIX on September 4 at the Araneta Coliseum.  

#UAAPLXXIX Kicks Off

The game is on once again as the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) LXXIX opening games unfold on September 4 Sunday, (Manila Time), 2:00 p.m. and air live on ABS-CBN Sports + Action and The Filipino Channel’s (TFC) platforms in key countries worldwide

Launching with a new battlecry “Dare to Dream,” the UAAP LXXIX President from host University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Fr. Ermito de Sagun says the challenge first goes out to the alumni to influence the youth through values and motivate them to succeed.  Most importantly, de Sagun says the challenge comes with a call for athletes to effect change – to serve as models to their fans who emulate them so their adherence to the ethical values in every game is essential.

Fr. De Sagun explains: “So many people are watching sports and supposedly they (athletes) are heroes.”  “We expect that all the players, all the athletes will behave properly in a way they can really inspire people.  So we expect them to do better, not only with regard to their skills but also with their ethical standards. There should be no cheating, no drugs, or even cheating in their achievements and so forth.”

The opening games will in fact air live worldwide on ABS-CBN Sports + Action and all TFC platforms so the role of media, especially of both, is important to rally UAAP’s battle cry.

According to ABS-CBN Integrated Sports Head Dino Laurena, “The values in sports reach out very, very strongly and that is our reason for launching our channel – because we don’t want to view this as a sports channel but to be an advocate for development not just for the athletes but everyone who watches the games.”

This season, de Sagun is also aiming to lead by example by adhering to the values of prudence and accountability.  A simple opening ceremony on September 3 (Manila time) at the UST Grounds is being planned by the host university.  However, the launch will be patterned after the recent Rio Olympics, where athletes from the different sports will parade.  Also, instead of having the opening games the same day, they will be moved to the next day, September 4

There are also a lot of other highlights to anticipate this season as Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles; De La Salle (DLSU) Green Archers; Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws; National University (NU) Bulldogs; University of the East (UE) Warriors; University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting and Lady Maroons; Adamson University (AdU) Falcons and University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers battle it out with this greater call and bigger challenges in Men’s and Women’s Basketball; Women’s Volleyball; Women’s Football; Streetdance; and Cheerdance competitions and possibly dance sport.

A new line-up of players is also expected for the teams of ADMU Blue Eagles and FEU Tamaraws as some of the former ADMU players moved to a different team. Hubert Cani and Arvin Tolentino are now with the FEU Tamaraws and will join their new team in defending last year’s championship title.

Jeron Teng will also go all out in playing for DLSU Green Archers (DLSU) as he is down to his final year with the team.

UAAP fans are also looking forward to the head-on battle between brother coaches Franz and Derrick Pumarenwho are coaching AdU Falcons and UE Warriors, respectively.

The coaches also made their fearless forecast in the traditional coaches’ assessment and predicted the DLSU Green Archers as the team to beat.

Fr. De Sagun is also glad with Kapamilyas’ overseas’ continued interest in the sport.  “Everybody loves sports, especially sports they play and which carry the names of their schools.  Also somehow, schools are like families also. So it somehow reunites their school spirit,” he ends.
