MMFF Announces Second Batch of Entries for 52nd Edition

Four more films are officially in the running for the 52nd Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), as the second batch of finished film entries was announced at EDSA Shangri-La Mall in Mandaluyong City.

The latest lineup brings together an eclectic mix of stories, from a historical drama and a faith-inspired biographical film to a poignant family drama and a story about a couple yearning to have a child of their own, featuring some of the country’s well-loved stars.

Leading the second batch is “Los Salvajes Bravos,” starring Romnick Sarmenta and Ruru Madrid. The film is directed by Paolo Dy and produced by Jescom Films.

The movie follows Ismael Alzate (Sarmenta), an Igorot ex-soldier loyal to Spain, and the group of Igorots he brings to the 1887 grand exposition at El Retiro Park in Madrid. As the Filipinos are stripped of their dignity and displayed before foreign audiences, they begin plotting their escape and their return home.

Also making the cut is “Little Hope,” starring Yassi Pressman and Pepe Herrera. Directed by Benedict Mique, the film is produced by Lonewolf Films.

The film follows a young girl battling cancer who, after losing her mother, faces the heartbreaking possibility that she may soon leave her father behind. Knowing that her time may be running out, she sets out to find someone who will accompany and care for her dad when she is gone. In a heartbreaking reversal of roles, the child finds herself preparing her father for a life without her, hoping he will not have to face the world alone.

Another entry is “Seeds of Peace: The Life of ev. Rhoel Gallardo, CMF,” starring Zaijian Jaranilla. Directed by Romel Galapia Ruiz and produced by Claretian Missionaries, the film chronicles the life and legacy of Rev. Rhoel Gallardo, a Claretian missionary whose story serves as the inspiration for the movie.

Rounding out the second batch is “A Perfect Marriage,” starring Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino. The film is directed by Dan Villegas and produced by Quantum Films, reuniting the popular screen tandem for another big-screen project. The story centers on a couple yearning to have a child of their own, exploring the challenges and emotions that come with their desire to build a family.

These four finished film entries join the first four movies announced in July, bringing the festival’s initial lineup to eight titles.

Viva Films’ “Second Miracle in Cell No. 7” stars Aga Muhlach, Jodi Sta. Maria, and Xia Vigor, while Regal Films’ “Haunted Carnival” features James Reid, Julia Barretto, John Arcilla, and Maricel Soriano.

GMA Pictures’ “Amir” stars Dennis Trillo, Caprice Cayetano, and Argus Aspiras, while Star Cinema’s “The Greatest Showdown” brings together comedy icons Vice Ganda and Vic Sotto.

With its growing lineup of historical narratives, inspiring true stories, family dramas, and star-powered productions, the 52nd MMFF continues to build anticipation for this year’s showcase of Filipino cinema.
