The concept of the film is a reality show in a movie that features five LGBT+ contestants that aim to move on and get the chance to win the one million pesos cash prize, the catch is that they need to survive different challenges and avoid temptation to make it til the end.
The five contestants came from different walks of life that suffered the same ill-fated love stories that left them broken-hearted.
The first character is Mark played by Petite, a single parent to his partner’s daughter. Mark aimed to get the one million to take his daughter back from his partner who left him despite all the things he did to save their relationship.
Next is Ali played by Marvin Yap, a chef and restaurateur who is into AFAM or Foreigners Assigned in Manila, Ali gets his heart broken when his partner left the country with a new partner leading to the bankruptcy of his restaurant, he aims to get the one million cash prize to rebuild his restaurant and move forward.
Third character is Alex played by Andoy Ranay. A corporate slave and a slave for love, Alex has the strongest personality amongst the five contestants, but despite this he is the most gullible and the easiest to be tempted, he aimed to win the cash prize to rebuild himself after his ex left him not only heart broken, but also financially broken.
Bernie Varga played by Iyah Mina is the fourth character, a veteran beauconera who never won a title, but despite that she was a very loving mother to all of her anak-anakan and she was able to find love with a straight guy, but like what other contestants, Bernie fell to the broken heart’s club as well.
Last, but definitely not the least is Jayson played by Teejay Marquez, a young and ambitious actor, a closeted gay who is willing to hide everything for the sake of his career, but as to what they say nothing gets to be hidden forever, as he was exposed and outed, Jayson seeks to redeem his career by joining the Broken Hearts Trip.
Also included in the story is the host of the show, Alfred played by Christian Bables, the host of the reality show that secretly hides his broken heart behind the cameras of his show.
THE CONS:
Having six main characters on board is really a challenge especially when it comes to telling their back stories. Imagine six different people with different stories to tell packed in a movie that runs in less than 2 hours, I just wished they focused on a single character that will be the center of the story telling.
I was hoping they were able to elaborate more on the pains that Alfred went through, I wished they were able to show redemption to all the characters after the competition, I was looking for closure, I’ve seen the forgiveness, I’ve seen the heart in every character, but I was still looking for the closure whether or not they were able to get over the hump and go on in their life.
THE PROS:
I could say that I enjoyed watching Broken Heart’s Trip. It's very engaging, it feels like you’ve joined them in their adventure. The cinematography was on point, I just love how they incorporated the scenic views of each destination to every challenge and task they went through.
Broken Heart’s Trip is very relatable, for sure a lot of people would be seeing themselves to either of the six characters. Watching this movie I remember so many people in each character, my favorite would be Iyah Mina’s character, you know the martyr type character that is always ready to give without asking anything in return and I could say I’ve seen and encountered people who love unconditionally like Bernie.
The movie is perfect for this season, forgiveness, moving on, and learning to love again, learning to love yourself more again.
If you want a feel good movie that will bring you to an adventure, will give you a good laugh, and will teach you lessons about your healing, forgiveness, and mending a broken heart, join the Broken Heart’s Trip this Christmas Day.
