Anjo Pertierra: Switching Courts

2021 was a fruitful year for us here in Bigbeezbuzz, having featured 40 guys for our Guy of the Month feature all I can say that we are in for more treats this 2022!

To start off our new year fresh we introduce to all of you our opening Guy for 2022, he is a former Spiker for the Mapua Cardinals in the NCAA and Cignal HD Spikers in the pro league, a certified hottie on and off the court, and he is now welcoming the year with a new career, peeps say hello to our January Guy, Anjo Pertierra.

In this feature we will get to know more about Anjo as we talk about volleyball, fitness, his entry in showbizness, and more in this month’s Guy of the Month feature.

Born Angelino Jose Pertierra, Anjo just turned 26 years old last January 4, he stands at around 6’3 or 6’4 tall, and he finished college with a degree in Psychology from the Mapua University

With his towering height and a slender physique, he is one of the best middle blockers in Philippine Volleyball, but Anjo wasn’t really a natural volleyball player he only started out playing when he was 3rd year high school since he was originally part of their school’s basketball team.

Anjo shared that he wasn’t really that tall in his early high school days in Muntinlupa Science High school as he only stands at around 5’10 when he was in his sophomore year, that’s why he got into volleyball as a cross training to improve his vertical leap and his agility as well, eventually he fell in love with the sport.

After High school, Anjo joined Ateneo for his freshman year, although after a year he transferred to Mapua and there he was awarded as best blocker in season 92 of the NCAA.

  1. What inspired you to push through with Volleyball as your sport?

  1. Have you ever encounter people who tells you that Volleyball is a female sports and you should be playing basketball instead? How did you deal with them?

  1. What are your strengths and weaknesses as a volleyball player?

“Ang posisyon ko po kasi sa volleyball is Middle blocker so feeling ko ang strength ko is yung blocking. Tapos ang weakness ko siguro is service, hindi ko alam kung bakit pero may mga times na nahihirapan ako magserve kahit sya yung pinaka madaling gawin na skill sa volleyball.”

  1. Name your five best volleyball players (Male or Female)

“Sa men’s, tie between Bryan Bagunas and Mark Espejo, number 3 si Joshua Umandal since sya yung sumunod na men’s volleyball player sa pinas na nasa ibang bansa ngayon, pang apat Vince Mangulabnan, setter sobrang galing nun, tapos pang lima si Kuya Alexis Faytaren idol ko sya since dati pa.”

“Sa women’s, number 1 syempre Alyssa Valdez, icon na yun, pero tie sila din sila ni Jaja parang Mark and Bryan, tapos Dindin Santiago, number four Mary Jean Balse, last si Manilla Santos.”

  1. Who’s the hardest to block?

“Pinaka mahirap na nakalaban ko bilang isang middle blocker si Kim Malabunga, ang tangkad nya, ang bilis nya kumilos, ang lakas nya pumalo. Ang hirap nya katapat.”

  1. If you didn’t choose to play volleyball, what would you be right now?

“Nasa corporate world ako ngayon nagtatrabaho sa bangko, kasi my mom is a banker.”

  1. What advice would you give to those aspiring volleyball players especially now that there’s a pandemic?

“Eto in general mapa Men’s or Women’s Volleyball, if you really love playing volleyball just play it ituloy nyo lang yung passion nyo, keep the fire going, hindi porket may pandemic ngayon hindi na mababalik yung eksena ng volleyball kasi ang volleyball sa Pilipinas nandyan at nandyan yan hindi mawawala.”

“Kung magstart ka palang edi learn sa mga nauna, watch their games ask advice from them, pero syempre yun pa din train your heart out, hindi pwedeng gusto mo yung isang bagay pero wala kang gagawin paraan para magexcell ka sa bagay na yun.”

“Kasi kahit ako naman eh, ako dati from zero ako as in ganun lang din ako nangarap lang din ako na uy gusto ko din mapanuod next time sa TV na naglalaro, ayun I trained my heart out ilang beses akong nakarinig ng hurtful at negative words, pero wag mo isasapuso yung mga sinasabi nilang negative sayo kasi nga at the end of the day mas kilala mo yung sarili mo mas alam mo yung capabilities mo kaysa sa sinsabi ng iba sayo, kaya keep on pushing and keep on moving forward.”
