Online Safety as told by TikTok Creators

Online Safety as told by TikTok Creators

TikTok Creator advocates online safety and raise online safety through the hashtag challenge #thinkb4youdo

With all the quarantine and social distancing measures in place to address the ongoing pandemic, much of our days are now spent online. Video conferencing has taken the place of meeting rooms and classrooms. Work files and school projects are sent over email or file sharing apps. Even our entertainment has gone digital, through streaming apps for movies and music, and social media has become the easiest way to keep in touch without physical interaction.

A recent report showed that there are about 73 Million internet and social media users in the Philippines at present, and this number continues to grow. Clearly, keeping the internet a safe place is important, now more than ever. Not only should we safeguard our digital identities, we also need to contribute to maintaining a kind and positive space where everyone can virtually co-exist.

Responsible use of the internet and social media is the key here, and this is especially true for those who create content online. In support of this, TikTok has made a commitment to ensure that the platform continues to be a safe, welcoming place where users can creatively and freely express themselves.

There are things that we can all do to stay safe and protected as we share our lives with others over the internet. To learn more about this, check out this quick roundup of online safety tips and reminders from top TikTok creators in the Philippines.

1. Personal safety should come first. Creating awesome content must not come at the expense of your physical well-being. @magicmannex shows that sometimes swag moves are better than backflips.

2. Be aware of your surroundings, not just your screen. While shooting content, keep an eye out for stairs, busy streets, or obstacles in the way. Take a cue from @missnikkiannshee who actually stops recording while going down the stairs in order to prevent any accidents.

3. Be wary of suspicious emails, and watch what you click. Emails from legitimate sources will not require the sharing of sensitive information such as one-time pins or passwords, as @gylisgod says in this video.

4. Think before you post about work. When posting online, remember that you also represent the company that you work for. @coachubby reminds her fellow creators in the workforce to be mindful, and remember that you are an employee first before a creator.

5. Don’t post while driving. Not only is this unsafe, it could get you into trouble with the law, too. @attorneycher warns her followers of the legal consequences of shooting videos behind the wheel, even during traffic, as stipulated in the Anti-Distracted Driving Act.

TikTok reinforces commitment to safer digital space with its 1st online safety webinar in PH

TikTok hosted its first-ever online safety webinar in the Philippines titled Creating a Safe Online Environment for Creative Expression on August 27, 2020 as part of its commitment to continue being a safe and welcoming space for self-expression. Opening the online event and discussing the safety thrusts of the platform was TikTok Public Policy Head for the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia, Donny Eryastha. Sharing experiences with TikTok’s safety features from a parent and a content creator standpoint, celebrity Amy Perez also joined the conversation. Resource speakers from the Department of Education (DepEd) and UNICEF participated and shared each sector’s initiative in maintaining a digitally-safe community.

A panel discussion moderated by journalist and TV host, Kara Patria David-Cancio, highlighted internet and social media safety topics that are relevant to users in the Philippines.

Safety is a TikTok priority,” said Donny Eryastha, Head of Public Policy for the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. He provided viewers with a brief background on the app’s safety policies and features, and the continuing efforts made to ensure the security of their users. Eryastha emphasized that the app’s safety features can be fully realized if content creators and users actively use it, saying, “We encourage our content creators and users to help foster a safer online community. We designed the app with your safety in mind. Our privacy settings enable every user to filter who can view, react, or comment on their posts, as well as to who can duet or download their videos. Take the time to read our Community Guidelines. This will help you better understand the culture of positivity and creativity that we harbor and how you can help maintain a safer community for self-expression.

The next talk centered on the government’s efforts on digital safety for the Filipino youth. DepEd Child Rights Senior Officer Atty. Gil Anthony Aquino shared that with the  online learning transition, the education bureau has quickly adapted to these changes. Aquino stated, “Keeping children safe is everyone’s responsibility. It is a strong commitment that we have toward these young minds. Currently, we are bolstering the Child Protection Policy and in the process of consultation with our stakeholders. We welcome organizations and groups who are interested to do collaborations and contributions to our child protection initiatives.

This was followed by UNICEF Child Protection Specialist Atty. Marj Ardivilla, who spoke about how everyone can work together to build a safer digital space. UNICEF has been working to protect children online by increasing public awareness, strengthening investigation and prosecution of online sexual abuse and exploitation cases, and improving delivery of services in the most vulnerable communities. She also shared best practices that Filipinos can employ. During her talk, Atty. Marj appealed to the youth, “Online safety starts with you. During these difficult times, we need to practice empathy. Be kind online. Send positive messages and support your peers. Spread the word about online safety and spark meaningful conversations with your family and friends about this. Support our causes like SaferKidsPH and help keep Filipino kids safe online.

The final panelist to speak was Celebrity Content Creator, Amy Perez, who has become as popular for her TikTok videos as her TV programs. In sharing her digital journey as a content creator, she was able to help promote safe ways to create and share content through various online platforms. To wrap-up her talk, the millennial tita left a sensible piece of advice, “Technology is a tool we can use to our advantage to protect our children. Check the safety and privacy features of the apps that your children are using. Parental controls, like TikTok’s family pairing feature, is a helpful tool in monitoring our kids’ online activities.

TikTok’s Family Pairing offers parents a set of controls to manage their teens’ Digital Wellbeing. A comprehensive, expanded publication of the Community Guidelines was released in January 2020 to help maintain a supportive and welcoming environment on the platform. On top of these, TikTok provides other resources such as educational safety videos to continue to provide a safer space for creative self-expression.

The webinar ended with a Q&A session, which addressed queries from the audience, and provided viewers with additional insights on the topics discussed. All in all, it was an enriching afternoon of learning for all in attendance.

Watch out for more internet safety initiatives from TikTok in the coming weeks. Enjoy a safe and fun online environment when you download TikTok on your iOS and Android devices today.

Enzo Bonoan: Transforming Lives Through Fitness

Last week we talked about Enzo's fitness routines, this time we go deeper in his passion of transforming people not just in the physical aspect, but as a whole.

Enzo Bonoan has been a transformation coach for years now and changing ones perspective when it comes to life and health is his goal for his clients, just imagine how difficult it is for one to change another person's perspective, to drop the usual in exchange of having a new normal that would take time and a lot of patience, discipline, and perseverance not only for his client but also for him as he should be the perfect example of being what the word "Fit" is.

Enzo's ultimate goal is to be able to touch many people's lives through his advocacy which is fitness to everyone, read the full Q&A:

One’s transformation starts where?

For me, a transformation begins in the mind and that is when an individual makes the decision to make a change. I always ask my clients what their goals are because in a subtle way, they are making that decision.

Any tips for those who want to lose weight or wanted to be fit during this community quarantine I think it would be very good to start with a concrete goal in mind and commit to it. This way, a sound and practical strategy can be made. Then from there, nutrition and exercise plans can be made following certain concepts and taking certain factors into consideration (ex. Favorite foods, allergies, less movement due to staying at home) When it comes to weight management, majority of the equation is about ones diet. One tip that I give to my clients is to practice MO-VA-BA (Moderation, Variety & Balance) and the 80-20 Rule (80% of total caloric intake should come from nutrient-dense foods while we can eat “fun foods” for the remaining 20%). Nutrition is really about quantity and quality, but also about consistency. Especially with less movement due to staying at home, watching ones food intake is more necessary to staying in shape. What’s the most important thing for someone to achieve their fitness goal? For me, it’s really about consistency. Reaching ones fitness goal will not happen in a week or two. Nor may it happen in a few months. The best strategy to reach a fitness goal is to find one that works but also allows you to enjoy the process even after you reach your goal. Small but daily wins add up into big ones. What’s your ultimate goal? My ultimate goal is to be able to affect as many lives as I can through my advocacy and mission: Fitness for everyone. My idea of purpose in life is about making the world a better place not just for myself but for other people. I believe that through promoting fitness for everyone, people can be healthier and happier and thus be able to enjoy life to the fullest.

We are heading to the final week of our feature with Enzo Bonoan, next week we'll get to know more of him behind fitness coaching, for more updates follow Enzo on his social media accounts, on his Facebook Page at fb.com/enzbonoan or on his IG at instagram.com/enzobonoan24.

FDCP’S FILMPHILIPPINES Awards First Cycle of Applications to its Brand New Film Incentives

Four international productions, with two shot in the Philippines and another two co-produced with a Philippine company, are the first recipients of incentives from the FilmPhilippines Office (FPO) of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).

Through the Film Location Incentive Program (FLIP), the Filipino line producers of “Almost Paradise” and “Survivor Russia” will receive a 20% cash rebate on their Qualified Philippine Production Expenses (QPPE). The minimum spending requirement is PHP 8 million.

The US television/video on demand (VOD) series “Almost Paradise” is the first FLIP recipient. It wrapped up production in Mactan Island, Cebu province just before the community quarantine was imposed nationwide. Directed by awarded director/producer Dean Devlin (“Independence Day”, “Geo-Storm”, “Universal Soldier”, etc.), the action-drama on the adventures of a former US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) agent who moved to the Philippines had 10 episodes that aired on WGN America. The US production under Electric Entertainment had Philippine broadcasting giant ABS-CBN Corporation as its line producer.

Even before the creation of FLIP, the Philippines is no stranger to the “Survivor” reality TV series, with several episodes and editions filmed in the Southeast Asian country’s pristine beaches. This year, “Survivor Russia” filmed 13 episodes in El Nido, Palawan province. Mastiff Russia, with Managing Director Anton Goreslavsky and General Producer Cyril Lounkevitch, partnered with Philippine Film Studios, Inc., which was involved in “Survivor Finland,” “Survivor Israel,” and “Born on the Fourth of July,” which won the Academy Awards for Best Film Editing and Best Director for Oliver Stone.

As for the select International Co-production Fund (ICOF), full length feature films can receive up to PHP 10 million. Filipino companies in a co-production agreement with international counterparts with at least PHP 5 million worth of QPPE are qualified to apply for the ICOF.

The supernatural thriller “Nocebo” by Lorcan Finnegan will get PHP 6.5 million from the ICOF. Set in Ireland and the Philippines, the film revolves around the revenge story of a Filipino helper against an Irish family. It is a co-production among Wild Swim Films from the UK, Epicmedia Productions, Inc. from the Philippines, and Lovely Productions from Ireland. Wild Swim’s filmography includes BAFTA Outstanding Debut by a British Writer winner “Under the Shadow” while Epicmedia produced the Venice Orizzonti Prize recipient “Engkwentro” by Pepe Diokno. Lovely Productions, which Finnegan set up with Steven Courtney and Brunella Cocchiglia, produced Finnegan’s “Without Name” and “Vivarium” which had a Cannes premiere.

Epicmedia is a co-producer for another ICOF recipient, “Kapag Wala Nang Mga Alon (When The Waves Are Gone)” by Lav Diaz, the acclaimed Filipino auteur recognized by the Berlin, Locarno, and Venice International Film Festivals. Snowglobe from Denmark and Films Boutique from France are also producers. Diaz’s latest film, a revenge drama with locations in Lisbon, Portugal and Manila and Tagaytay in the Philippines, will receive PHP 6 million. Snowglobe produced “BezBog” which made it to Locarno and Toronto while Films Boutique produced the Academy Awards-shortlisted film, “Bird of Passage.” Diaz and Epicmedia worked together on Berlinale Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize Winner “Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis (A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery).”

FDCP Chairperson and CEO Liza Diño-Seguerra is grateful for the support of international production companies that took a chance on FilmPhilippines and trusted the Filipino film and audiovisual industry. “The goal of these incentives is to open up the industry for collaboration with the rest of the world, for people to discover how talented we are, how good we are in providing service, and how the Philippines can be a global creative hub for films,” she remarked.

“We need to highlight what sets the Philippines apart from the rest of Asia: English is a second language to us. That's a significant advantage. We are also flexible when it comes to accommodating sudden changes in production. We certainly make things happen,” added Diño-Seguerra.

On top of the financial incentives provided by FLIP and ICOF, the FPO has a third incentive called Film Location Engagement Desk (FLEX), which assists local and foreign productions in all government transactions. FLEX also endorses international productions to Filipino producers and production companies that are duly registered with FDCP’s National Registry.

Among the projects that have received assistance from the FLEX incentive are “Survivor Europe” and feature film “CounterPlay.” “Survivor Europe” is produced by Banijay with local line producer Philippine Film Studios, Inc. while the action thriller “CounterPlay,” directed by Pedring Lopez and starring Hollywood actor Sam Worthington, is produced by MAM Media (Pte.) Ltd. of the US with BlackOps Studios Asia, Inc. as the local line producer.

To be the next FilmPhilippines incentive recipient, enter the Cycle 3 application that will run from September 1 to November 27, 2020. The application period remains up and running amid the pandemic to provide support for filmmakers affected by the COVID-19 crisis. The Cycle 3 is the last chance for productions to apply for the FLIP, ICOF, and FLEX this year. Grab the chance to shoot or work in the Philippines or be in a co-production with a Filipino company, and experience the ease and wonder of filmmaking with the incentives of FDCP’s FilmPhilippines.

Philippine Film Archive Continues Preservation of Gems from UPFI Film Collection

The community quarantine due to COVID-19 took over the second quarter of 2020, but this did not deter the Philippine Film Archive (PFA) from fulfilling its role of protecting our national film heritage, which includes the University of the Philippines Film Institute (UPFI) Film Center film collection.

The PFA, a division of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), reported that from April to June 2020, it was able to complete the rewinding, transfer, and inventory of Class A and Class B elements from its acquisitions from the UPFI Film Center.

Among the historical and cultural gems that went through the rewinding, transfer, and inventory process are two films done by National Artists. These are “Noli Me Tangere” (1961), in original print, by National Artist for Cinema Gerardo de Leon and “Bayan Ko: Kapit sa Patalim” (1984) by National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Lino Brocka.

Class A elements are in good condition with just minimal damage while Class B elements have medium to heavy damage such as warping, light to medium deterioration, slight blockage, and low to high Vinegar Syndrome. Class C elements, which are subject for disposal because of having melted images, blockage, or heavy deterioration, are undergoing rewinding, transfer, and inventory at present.

The PFA team acquires film elements from the UPFI Film Center.

In August 2019, the UPFI Film Center turned over 1,024 film reels to the PFA for archiving, scanning, digitization, and possible restoration. There are even Russian titles in the acquired collection. Through FDCP Chairperson and CEO Liza Diño-Seguerra, the PFA had a fruitful meeting with UPFI Director Patrick Campos which led to the completion of the acquisition of the UPFI film collection.

PFA Head Don Gervin Arawan explains the rollercoaster of emotions that he and his team feels whenever they do the film archiving process: “There is excitement during acquisition; feeling of loss before we leave, seeing some films that were destroyed in time; thrill during inspection; and tension during the handling of some delicate and damaged films.”

He continued, “Then, there is pleasure after initial cleaning and transfer to a new container, and fulfillment when we complete the inventory and put them on racks or inside the film vaults. And before the day ends, we feel very honored to be able to do this for our country and for the present and future generations.”

The PFA team transfers film reels from old to new cans

Arawan reveals that the plans for the UPFI gems include digitizing the collection, migrating it to a new medium, and generating access copies for the public. Titles with significant historical and cultural values, such as “Noli Me Tangere” and “Bayan Ko: Kapit sa Patalim,” will be prioritized for the PFA Film Restoration Program, which has already restored nine titles and is currently restoring two films.

“Our beloved Chairperson Liza Diño-Seguerra is always ecstatic about these kinds of projects and she already has plans on how to showcase and share to the Filipino people this culturally and historically significant endeavor,” concluded Arawan.
