NCAA Season 96: Rise Up Stronger on June 13

After more than a year after the cancellation of their 95th season due to the pandemic, the oldest collegiate sports league in the country is finally set to make a return as they are ready to rise up against the pandemic and are all set to open their 96th season this June 13.

But don't get too excited yet, because of the still on going pandemic and the strict protocols that the IATF has imposed, the league will just open its doors to limited sports and events that will be done virtually such as online chess, poomsae, and taekwondo.

Contact sports on amateur level are still prohibited by the government, but the league has posted the Basketball and Volleyball in their calendar of events and are still awaiting for approval from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Inter Agency Task Force against emerging and infectious diseases (IATF).

For now, the NCAA considers holding skills based online challenges like a slam dunk challenge, 3 point shootout, who knows if they can pull off a 1 vs 1 basketball tournament just like in the NBL.

For more updates you can watch "Rise Up Together: The Road to NCAA Season 96" primer on GTV everyday, Mondays to Fridays at 2:45pm, Saturdays at 4:30pm and on Sundays at 5pm. Get to know more of your favorite NCAA teams, athletes, and legends in this 21 episode show that already began last Sunday, May 23.

Pinoy Against The World: Louie Sangalang moves closer to The Apprentice top spot

Filipino bet Louie Sangalang faced his toughest week yet on The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition as he was placed on the chopping block for the first time in the unscripted reality series in Episode 10.

Sangalang also dealt with hostility from some of his female co-candidates who questioned his moves and criticized him for not contributing as much as he was expected to.

Only four candidates are competing now for the top prize of a $250,000 job offer as Sityodtong's protégé and chief of staff at the ONE Championship Global Headquarters in Singapore, and Sangalang is not just the only male in the group but the only Asian as well.

The usually unflappable and stoic Pinoy, felt the pressure, however, as he broke down on their way to a soccer game with the children of Boys Town Singapore, one of Sityodtong’s favorite beneficiaries. Sangalang’s human side was not lost on the ONE founder, chairman and CEO who listened to Sangalang’s revelations.

Sangalang said the tribulations he's had in life -- from his battle with cancer to previous personal issues that almost cost him his marriage -- fuel him to give his all in The Apprentice and to make the most of second chances.

"I came into this competition with an all or nothing mindset. If I have to start from nothing again, I know my wife will be there for me. At a point in my life, I made a very huge mistake against my wife. But we saved our marriage. That's what really gets me, that someone can wholeheartedly support you in spite of you having hurt that person in the past. Our relationship is what inspires me to be The Apprentice. There's so many things that I've done wrong in my life and I just want to fix it. I just want to be a much better person. That's the reason why I am so driven by this. I just want to be able to kind of give back," he said.

In the business task, Sangalang was the only candidate who did not volunteer to become project manager in the trade event that would attract clients for the Jakarta International Expo. He vouched instead for Indonesian Paulina Purnomowati to take the lead given her familiarity with the place.

He took the backseat anew and handled research, prompting American candidate Monica Millington to say " Louie might be playing it safe again. I think he can organize and research, but as for the main stuff we've been doing, he can't do most of it. I don't think he's got the creativity.”

Russian Irina Chadsey chimed in, "Louie is the weakest link. When the time comes in the boardroom, we'll have to highlight that at the appropriate moment."

In his defense, Sangalang argued that team performance was paramount. “If you asked me to do creatives, I could have, but it's a matter of who is doing it better than myself, right?"

Sangalang's worries did manifest as the judges, which included Sityodtong, ONE Senior Vice President of Corporate Development and Strategy Niharika Singh, CCM Group director Prajna Murdaya, and Jakarta International Expo director Karuna Murdaya, observed his sales pitch to be "very flat, nervous, and a bit stiff."

Thus Sangalang found himself in the bottom three for the first time in the competition, alongside Paulina and Irina. But Louie avoided elimination as it was Paulina who was sent home.

"God or the universe gives the toughest battles to the strongest warriors. Whatever your past is has nothing to do with your future. So dream the biggest dream no matter how crazy it is that you want to do in your life," Sityodtong had told the group at Boys Town.

"You need to shine," other judge Niharika Singh said. "We want somebody who has a clear spike, but who also shows his ability to try out different things that they've not done in the past."

If Sangalang can truly be dynamic and get out of his comfort zone as Singh said, he stands a good chance of being “The One”.

The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition is showing across Asia on AXN, the show’s official Asian broadcast partner, with markets to include Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

The first season of “The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition” consists of 13 episodes and will be seen in the Philippines on Thursdays, 8:50 pm on AXN cable network and on Mondays at 9 p.m. on One Sport.

Pia Wurtzbach Goes Live for the First-Ever TikTok Exclusive

TikTok Philippines just launched TikTok Exclusive, an exciting new series of live streams, last May 15. The series is set to feature the hottest and most in-demand celebrities, who will go live and connect with their followers on the platform.

During the first-ever live stream for TikTok Exclusive, the featured celebrity was former Miss Universe, Pia Wurtzbach. The actress, model, endorser, and host shared that it was her first time to ever go live, and she enthusiastically updated the viewers and fans on her life and career.

According to Pia, she has been on TikTok for a while now, just enjoying watching videos. It was only last year when she started uploading content of her own, and now Pia has over 400,000 followers on her verified TikTok account. She said that she is enjoying creating more videos about fashion, her travels, and some that even feature her boyfriend, Jeremy Jauncey. She also spoke briefly about her controversial TikTok emoji-filled bio, which she took down for a short period, but is now back up.

A lot of her fans thought that Pia was overseas, and were surprised to find out during the livestream that she's actually in the Philippines because of work commitments. In fact, Pia has been so busy with work that she was unable to fly to the US to watch the recent Miss Universe pageant, and instead supported our candidate, Rabiya Mateo from back home.

 Generated

Through TikTok's Q&A Live feature, viewers got to ask Pia questions, which were mostly about the Miss Universe pageant, which she herself won in 2015. She was asked about Rabiya's controversial yellow evening gown, the good luck charm that she gave Rabiya, plus a few questions about her personal pageant preparations and how long it took for her to get ready during the competition.

While replying to the audience's questions, Pia reminisced about the situation backstage every time a cut was made. This led her to promise to share some throwback Miss Universe videos on her TikTok account. And of course, the TikTok Exclusive could not end without Pia demonstrating her iconic smize, much to the delight of the viewers.

FDCP's FilmPhilippines Incentives Program Grants Over Php27 million to Support 6 Films For Cycle 1 of 2021

The FilmPhilippines Office (FPO) of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) has selected six films to be grantees in the recently concluded Cycle 1 of the FilmPhilippines Incentives Program, bringing the total amount of incentives for 2021’s first cycle to at least PHP 27.4 million.

The lone Film Location Incentive Program (FLIP) awardee is “Electric Child” by Swiss Simon Jaquemet, produced by 8horses GmbH (Switzerland) with local production company Epicmedia Productions, Inc. The sci-fi drama was approved to receive a 20% cash rebate on their eligible expenses in the Philippines.

The FLIP is a selective fund that requires a minimum qualified production spending of PHP 8 million in the Philippines in order to receive a 20% cash rebate capped at PHP 10 million. The cash rebate will be given to the Filipino line producers involved in the approved foreign productions, provided that they are registered with the FDCP National Registry.

As for the International Co-production Fund (ICOF), three films directed by Filipinos were awarded to receive a selective fund of up to PHP 10 million for full-length feature films that have at least PHP 5 million worth of production expenses spent in the Philippines. Filipino companies in co-production with international productions must be registered with the FDCP National Registry.

Sci-fi thriller “Hunter” by Raya Martin, produced by ACC Cinematografica and Through the Lens Entertainment (USA/Singapore), was awarded PHP 6.2 million. “Whether The Weather is Fine” by Carlo Francisco Manatad, currently in post-production, will receive PHP 2.5 million. The drama on Typhoon Yolanda is co-produced by Filipino companies ACC Cinematografica, Globe Studios, Dreamscape Entertainment, Quantum Films, Black Sheep, and Plan C together with international companies House on Fire (France), AAND (Singapore), KawanKawan Media (Indonesia), and Weydemann Bros. (Germany).

The only animation selection in this cycle is “Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah vs. The Amazonistas of Planet X” by Avid Liongoren. The comedy based on the best selling graphic novel on LGBT superhero Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah was awarded PHP 10 million. It is produced by Rocketsheep Studio, Ghosts City Films (France), Maltu Trading/Hoorakhsh Studios (Malaysia/Iran), and Graham Films (Norway).

Meanwhile, the first recipients of the ASEAN Co-production Fund (ACOF) are two films by Indonesians: “This City is a Battlefield” by Mouly Surya, which was granted PHP 1.2 million, and “Autobiography” by Makbul Mubarak, which was awarded PHP 3.5 million.

The ACOF is a selective fund that can provide up to USD 150,000 (approximately PHP 7.2 million) to a full feature that involves at least one company from an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) country minority or majority co-producing with the Philippines. The director of an ACOF awardee should be of ASEAN nationality.

“This City is a Battlefield” is a historical drama about a former World War II hero produced by Epicmedia Productions, Inc., CineSurya (Indonesia), and Giraffe Pictures (Singapore) while the drama “Autobiography” is produced by ACC Cinematografica, KawanKawan Media (Indonesia), In Vivo Films (France), Potocol (Singapore), NiKo Film (Germany), and Staron Films (Poland).

“On top of seeking to boost the country’s tourism and creative industries by providing filming and co-production funding support, the FDCP’s FilmPhilippines Incentives Program also aims to support Southeast Asian Cinema by creating a fund for ASEAN co-productions with Filipino companies. This is our little way of helping our filmmakers and workers throughout the Southeast Asian region amid these challenging times,” said FDCP Chairperson and CEO Liza Diño.

The six latest FilmPhilippines Incentives grantees, along with Cycle 1 applicants for FLIP, ICOF, and ACOF, were automatically entitled to avail of the Film Location Engagement Desk (FLEX), a special incentive offering a one-stop-shop service that connects international productions to Filipino talents, filmmakers, and companies under the FDCP National Registry and assists local and foreign productions in all government transactions.

The FPO is already accepting applications for FilmPhilippines 2021 Cycle 2, which began on May 3 and will run until July 30. The Selection Committee deliberations will take place in August. Meanwhile, Cycle 3 will be held from September 1 to November 29 with Selection Committee deliberations in December.

Playful Chatri, Tearful Louie: Episode 10 reveals The Apprentice cast’s secret sides

A different side of ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong was seen in the latest episode of The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition as he joined the cast in a breakfast feast so he could get to know each of the five remaining candidates better on a personal level.

[EP 10 Teaser Video:  https://youtu.be/I-sPcZoRcnY]

Sityodtong, who has an estimated net worth of US$350 million, is the founder of the world’s largest martial arts organization. He is also the host of “The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition,” where one of these candidates will earn a US $250,000 job offer to work directly as his protégé in business and ONE’s new Chief of Staff.

ONE’s big boss, an active donor to the Boys’ Town Singapore that helps children and youth in need, also suited up with the candidates and played a game of soccer with the kids.

Episode 10 also revealed another side of the lone male candidate Louie Sangalang. Often quiet and reserved, a tearful Sangalang opened up about his personal struggles and mistakes that now drive and inspire him to do his best in the competition.

The business challenge was given a new twist. Team Valor and Team Conquest are no more, as Sangalang, Jessica Ramella, Irina Chadsey, Monica Millington, and Paulina Purnomowati come together to form one team. Louie Sangalang’s team defeats MMA superstar Demetrious Johnson’s team in the physical challenge of The Apprentice, wins boardroom challenge as well

Louie Sangalang wildest dreams never included he’d ever cross paths with MMA superstar Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson, let alone face off against him.

Jiu-jitsu purple belt Sangalang was just a fan who witnessed Johnson's ascent as one of the best fighters the world has ever seen.

But in Episode 9 of The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition, the 43-year-old procurement consultant from the Philippines got the chance to face the MMA legend – not in the Circle, but in a trampoline arena where the seven remaining candidates played trampoline dodgeball with DJ.

Lucky for Louie, he had played dodgeball growing up and was confident of his game. Sangalang’s shining moment came when he eliminated Johnson in the clincher which led to his teammate Monica Millington delivering Team Valor’s game-winning hit on Irina Chadsey.

"Getting to hit a world champion, that's going to be something for the books in my life," Sangalang commented as he flashed a winning smile and did backflips on the trampoline.

Staying with the youthful vibe of the episode, the candidates next created a campaign promoting Alpha Bravo e-sports Pro, TUMI's first gaming bag collection, in the boardroom challenge.

Still riding high from the physical task victory, Sangalang was quick to vouch for Millington to take the lead for Team Valor -- a strategic move as he wanted to see the 30-year-old fashion entrepreneur from the United States rise to the occasion. "I have a very high regard for Monica's capabilities when it comes to competencies in these fields.

Team Valor came up with its "Journey of a Champion" campaign, a tournament of champions that would launch the ultimate sling bag for e-sports athletes, which was praised by ONE Championship chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong, with a few tweaks here and here.

"I thought your execution plan was believable, but you just chose everyday heroes. I think that's an almost impossible concept," the executive pointed out. "But if you choose someone who's on the cusp of being professional, it'll get a lot of credibility in the gaming community. A little bit of a tweak and this concept can be explosive," said Chatri.

It wasn't long before Chatri gave Team Valor the victory, a testament to the cohesiveness Louie, Monica, and Paulina have fostered. Germany’s Kexin Ye and Nazee Sajedi of the United States were eliminated in this episode.

Now only five candidates remain – with just Sangalang and Indonesia’s Paulina Purnomowati at the only Asians in the competition for the prize of a US$250,000 job offer as Sityodtong's protégé, chief of staff, and head of a business development unit at the ONE Championship Global Headquarters in Singapore.

These 5 Beauties Are Queens on TikTok, Too!

It's no secret that Filipinos are big on beauty pageants. Much like sporting events, on coronation nights, Filipinos unite to support the country's representative, cheering her on together with the entire nation. The Philippines is also considered a beauty pageant powerhouse, and thanks to our commitment to the art of pageantry, we are currently the second most crowned country in international beauty pageants. We are also one of only 5 countries who have won each of the Big Four international pageants - Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International, and Miss Earth - at least once.

The inspiring Filipinas who have competed in international pageants are all strong women, who, in their own ways, help push for women empowerment in the country.  They are inspiring and fun, too, just like TikTok, and they share this side of themselves with fans and followers through their posts on the app.
