#UAAPLXXIX Day 11: Ateneo Dominates Katipunan Neighbor, La Salle EscapePast Red Warriors

The Ateneo Blue Eagles streak past their Katipunan neighbors, UP Maroons after a 79-64 victory. Even though the Maroons were able to start the game fighting, taking a 17-13 lead in the first period, but UP still couldn't maintain the level of their game as they went to the second period the Blue Eagles took over the lead and began to pull away, taking a 38-29 lead to end the second period. 

Ateneo continues to dominate UP in the second half, keeping their lead up by as much as 10 points , the Maroons were able to gain momentum at the end part of the third period to cut the deficit down by just 6, 58-52. 

Going to the final period the Maroons kept on chasing down the lead of Ateneo, but to no avail still the Blue Eagles were able to secure their lead and even extending it as high as 77-60 to keep the win on their side. 

Thirdy Ravena led the Blue Eagles again with 22 points and 10 rebounds, Chibuezeh Ikeh and Anton Asistio added 14 and 10 points respectively. On the side of the Maroons, Paul Desiderio had 25 big points to lead UP in losing efforts,  while Jett Manuel added 17 points.

The De La Salle Green Archers stays undefeated after escaping past the gritty UE Red Warriors in a 84-79 ball game, that had their head coach Aldin Ayo ejected early in the second quarter for mocking a referee by chasing it and asked it to wear a pair of glasses.  

The flexed their muscles early in the opening period, showing an early dominance against the young UE squad as they take an early 25-15 lead. going to the second period La Salle still in control of the game extends their lead up to a 31-15 lead, but slowly as the quarter progresses the Red Warriors were able to catch up with the game of the guys in green, though the still ended the third period down 30-44.   

In the second half the Red Warriors continues to chase the Green Archers, cutting the lead down to 39-46, but La Salle was able to recover quickly to keep UE at bay 62-55 at the end of the third/ 

The Red Warriors continues to rally behind La Salle as they again started to get strings of unanswered points to cut the lead of the Green Archers down 78-81 with few ticks remaining in the game, but still La Salle gets the breaks of the game to take home the win. 

Ben Mbala had a solid game, having 19 points and 17 rebounds for La Salle. While rookie Juztine Baltazar added 14 points and 9 rebounds, Prince Rivero added 11 points and 8 rebounds to go 6-0. Alvin Pasaol on the other side of UE had 22 points, while Edson Batiller added 13 points.

#NCAA92: Day 35: Play Offs: San Beda Red Lions Take The Top Spot, LSGH Snatch Third Spot

The San Beda Red Lions takes over the top spot again for the eleventh straight season after outlasting the Arellano University Chiefs in a play off match awhile ago at the Arena in San Juan.

The Chiefs started the game eager to secure the top spot after they take an early 16-7 lead in the opening quarter, but the Red Lions were able to make an early comeback as they were able to make a run to take over the lead 23-22 at the end of the opening period.

In the second period Arellano was able to take over the driver seat again as they went on a 10-0 run -against the misfiring Red Lions to take a 33-23 lead midway of the second period, but San Beda was able to answer back with their own 15-0 run to retake the lead 38-33 at the end of the first half.

The Red Lions continues to roar in the second half as they were able keep their lead against the Chiefs, even extending it to a 52-40 lead. Arellano was able to make another run to closed in at 53-56, though San Beda was still able to finish the third still on top with a slim 60-59 lead.

San Beda started the fourth quarter red hot as they were able to again extend their lead to keep Arellano down 73-60. Though the Chiefs were able to cut the deficit down to 69-76, the Red Lions were already unstoppable as they were able to secure their lead until the end of the game.

San Beda's Acee Soberano had a career high 26 points, he is 6/9 in the three point area, and 4/5 inside the paint. Robert Bolick and Benedict Adamos added 14 points each, while Dan Sara even though he injured himself early in the game was still able to produce 10 points for the Red Lions.

On the side of Arellano, Jiovani Jalalon led his team again though in losing efforts this time, having 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Kent Sallado and Donald Gumaru added 11 points, Kraniel Villoria added 10 points, and Dionce Holts added 12 rebounds.

In the Juniors Division, the LSGH Greenies snatches the third spot from the struggling Arellano Braves sending them down to their fifth straight loss after a tight 79-76 victory.

The Greenies were off to a blazing start, having an early 11-2 run to kick off the game, though the Braves were quick to match the output of the Greenies to tie the game and even take over the game at 21-18 at the end of the opening period.

Going to the second period the Braves were able to maintain their lead, but the Greenies were on a roll mid way of the quarter to take over the lead again 30-25. The Braves were able to bounce back to make a 10-2 run to end the first half up 35-32.

The second half became more intense as both squads take turns in taking the lead, with the Greenies getting the better of it as they were able to end the third with a 57-56 lead.

In the final period the Braves retake the lead and extend it to a 66-61 lead with less than 5 minutes remaining in the game, Entering final minute the Greenies were able to snatch the lead 75-74, crossing the Rubicon to steal the victory away from the Braves.

Unique Naboa led the Greenies this time, having 21 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds, Troy Mallillin added a double-double 12 points and 11 rebounds, Haribon Espinosa and Ladis Lepalam added 12 and 11 points respectively for LSGH.

Guilmer Dela Torre had 20 points to lead the Braves in losing efforts, currently Dela Torre is the number one player in the juniors division of the basketball tournament for the 92nd season of the NCAA. Carlo Abadeza added 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Lars Sunga had 14 points and 14 rebounds and Jayson Danas added  14 points.

Miss United Continents 2016

Our very own Miss Philippines Jeslyn Santos bagged the Miss United Continents 2016 crown yesterday. The 23 year old, Broadcast Communication graduate bested 27 other candidates in the pageant held at the Palacio de Cristal, Guayaquil in Ecuador. 

Miss Denmark, Mette Riis Sorensen was the first runner  up, India's Lopamudra Raut was named second runner up, Taynara garganti of Brazil placed third runner up, Cynthia Lizeth Duqe Garza of Mexico placed as fourth runner up, and fifth runner up is Rita Silvestre of Panama.

#UAAPLXXIX Day 10: FEU Fend Off Fighting Maroons, Bulldogs Repulse UST's Late Comeback

 

The Resilient FEU Tamaraws fends off the resurging UP Maroons in a low scoring 51-49 affair. Both squads struggled to find their rhythm inside the court scoring the lowest output of a quarter in the history of the UAAP, producing a 5-4 output to close the opening quarter in favor of UP. 

The low scoring affair continues in the second period, though the Tamaraws were able to score a couple more points to take control of the game  with a 20-15 lead to end the first half. 

Entering the second half FEU was able to build a 10 point deficit in the third period, but UP was able to came close at the end of the third at 30-35, but FEU’s Joe Trinidad shoot down a buzzer beater three to give FEU more cushion entering the final period. 

UP gained momentum in the final period, forcing FEU to commit crucial turnovers that caused the Tamaraws to collapse momentarily, giving way for UP to take a 7-0 run to cut the deficit down 41-37 early in the fourth. 

The Fighting Maroons kept fighting as they gave FEU a hard time chasing the balls, entering the 3 minute mark of the game Ron Dennison was slapped with a disqualifying foul against Paul Desiderio. 

In the final two minutes of the game UP finally was able to tie the game at 47, having a 17-6 run, but Monbert Arong had other things in mind, having a three point play that gave FEU a 50-47 lead withv14.6 seconds left in the game, Rookie Maroon Javi Gomez De Liaño was able to put up a basket, but failed to get a foul to push UP closer at 59-60. 

Monbert Arong led the charge of the Tamaraws having 14 points, while Prince Orizu lead the defense of FEU having 15 rebounds. On the side of UP, Paul Desiderio had 15 points, while Dave Moralde added a double-double 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The National U Bulldogs were able to escape the late run of the UST Growling Tigers to take a 75-66 win, to end their two game slump. 

The Bulldogs were off to a hot start in this game as they led the Tigers 25-11, the domination of NU continues in the second period as they kept UST far from them extending their lead up 46-29 at the end the first half.

In the Second half, the Bulldogs extends their lead up to 25 points, taking a 69-44 lead in the third period, going into the final period the Tigers starts to growl back into the game as they started a 16-0 run to closed in at 69-60. 

UST came as close as 66-73, but NU was saved by the bell as time already ran out, foiling the late surge of the Growling Tigers. 

JJay Alejandro had 16 points to led the scorers for NU, Matthew Salem added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Louie Vigil led the scorers for UST with 17 points and Jon Sheriff added 16 points.
