This is not just a tale about a family’s typhoon survival nor a dramatic documentation of what a typhoon’s aftermath in the Philippines looks like. Kun Maupay Man It Panahon follows the story of a mother and son looking for their loved ones after the devastating Super Typhoon Yolanda, with an international name Typhoon Haiyan, greatly hit their place. This film is the directorial debut of Carlo Francisco Manatad, who is exceptionally ambitious in this work of art.
There are a lot to unpack in this film. From the introduction that already took half of the film, the abstraction that is detached from our common knowledge, and the visual feast that is full of symbolisms and unsettling sceneries — a lion in the roof, a freshly chopped chicken full of blood put into a backpack, a group of men doing caroling in the middle of a chaotic situation, a carabao with a bahay kubo full of plants in its back that suddenly appeared out of nowhere and a whole lot more. It honestly feels like a fantasy film full of imaginary elements, a Disney film that is far off the worldly things. It is realism at its finest!
Daniel Padilla, Charo Santos, and Rans Rifol are the main casts of this film. Star studded as you may say, but more that, their portrayal is glorious and delightful! One haunting scene not to miss is when Daniel Padilla intentionally hit Charo Santos with a rock — which is absurd, weirdly satisfying and is present not just for aesthetic purposes but for an important reason. There are also a few more brilliant actors and actresses that made a cameo in this film which adds to the “good mix” of the ensemble.
Overall, Kun Maupay Man It Panahon is the hope that the Philippine Cinema Industry is waiting for. It is not just about the enchanting cinematography, the eerie sound design, the power of the famous cast, the visualization of the elements, and the breathtaking production design. Whether the Weather is Fine is all about the execution and its creative depiction. Though there may be a lot to digest, but intaking this triumphant work will definitely change the moviegoer’s perspective when it comes to local films. It is strange, bold, awakening, and thought-provoking, which further proves that its accolades and recognition abroad was well earned.
