JP Habac’s latest film is surely a relevant piece of art to the current times. The fact that it was released online proves the interrelation of the plot to the situation of the industry during this pandemic. It is a relatable love story that delved to the importance of connection and communication in a lockdown-built relationship.
The chemistry between Janine Gutierrez and JC Santos, is as convincing as it is. The accuracy of most of the scenes to real life situations builds the foundation of an authentic storytelling in addition to the stellar performances of both the protagonists and the ensemble cast. More so, the calmness of the characters brings a refreshing layer of narration that is not dragging, forced, and mentally uncomfortable to watch.
The directing capabilities of Habac is truly unmatched, especially after the ground-breaking BL series, Gaya Sa Pelikula, which sets the stone to a modern-age love storytelling. Habac’s way of simple but impactful dialogues, in the context of Gaya Sa Pelikula, can be seen throughout Dito at Doon which flawlessly fit to lifelike tales like this. In addition, his use of unconventional treatment which is far-off the basic web series where scenes are shot from one screen to another, is not present here. Instead, Habac took advantage of juxtaposed scenes intercutting between smartphone screen scenes and actual communication scenes which makes it more visually appealing and entertaining.
All in all, Dito At Doon is satisfying enough. Considering all the health protocols that needs to be followed, limited production days and restricted movement in the set, still, they have managed to execute it nicely. It is a successful product of the pandemic that will be remembered even after the looming virus dies out.
