Mobile Phones came a long way from the enormous walkie talkie to the futuristic foldables and dual screen devices, and this blog will tackle the pros and cons of the Foldables and Phones with Dual Screen.
We have here a Samsung Galaxy Fold and an LG V50 Thinq, both are released in 2019 and both are the first iteration of their variants.
Let’s take a look first of the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Fold was released August of 2019 and was the first foldable smartphone of Samsung. The first time it was released in the market the device was plagued by screen issues as many tech reviewers complained that the display got destroyed after they removed a plastic coating that looked like a screen protector, but Samsung says it was part of the screen and not supposed to be removed.
Samsung then recalled all the Samsung Galaxy Fold units that was already dispatched and made amendments on the unit’s screen adding more security on the plastic coating of the screen that sealed it up to avoid peeling whether accidental or intended.
I will list down the things that I liked and disliked with the Galaxy Fold after a month of using it;
THE PROS
The first thing I really liked about the Fold is obviously the Foldable screen, aside from it being so futuristic, the screen gives the user a premium viewing experience, the AMOLED screen gives out punchy and definitely a high definition viewing experience perfect for media consumption specially if you are going to binge watch movies and series.
Productivity is also a plus in this device as you can put 3 apps simultaneously in the screen, like you can multitask as you can watch youtube while browsing facebook, twitter, or writing down notes or doing a vlog. And because you can utilize the Fold with your work, the third thing that I like with this device is its battery.
Battery life is also superb, despite having a huge 7.3 inch amoled screen and another 4.6 inch amoled screen in front the Fold still manages to last for more than two days with regular use and a full day of binge watching my favorite movies and series.
Another thing that I really loved about the Fold is the 6 cameras that it features, 2 in the main screen, 1 in front, and 3 cameras in the back that all shot beautiful images whether a good wideangle panoramic view down to selfies they are all good.
THE CONS
Despite me loving the Galaxy Fold there are still imperfections;
The first time I get to hold the Galaxy Fold I felt it was too fragile for me, despite the elegant look and the solid built of the phone there’s this part of me that feels the device is a bit sensitive specially the screen although the magnets that secures the screen when it is folded is super strong the worry of dusts getting inside the screen is still there since the phone is not IP certified.
The lack of IP certification means that your phone can’t be with you in the beach and in the shower, also you should always be wary of your pockets since dusts and other debris could compromise your device.
If you are OC when it comes to the screen of your phone, the fold might not be the phone for you since it is foldable there’s the crease in the middle of the screen and though it is not that noticeable on another viewing angle sometimes it will just distract you when you focus on it that much.
I said that you can utilize the fold for you to maximized your productivity sadly there are apps that doesn’t allowed to be used on multitasking just like Instagram, tho I think it’s only instagram that doesn’t fully work on the mutliwindow view it’s a major application for me, but if you’re not into it then its good to go.
Last cons of the foldables is its pricing, since it is new the price is just sky high with the Samsung Galaxy Fold debuted in the Philippines at around ₱110,000, although the hefty price equates to a premium device and a generous package that comes along with the device such as the Galaxy Buds.
THE VERDICT
Foldable Smartphones are here to stay and though there are things that still needs to be improve these type of smartphone is the smartphone of the future as we have reached the boundary between smartphones and tablets, the foldables are the nearest alternative we have in combining the regular smartphone and a tablet for more productivity without compromising the size or compactibility of the device.
