#UAAPLXXIX Day 2: NU Outlast Red Warriors, La Salle Escape Resurging Tamaraws


The National University Bulldogs outlast the UE Red Warriors 72-66. The bulldogs had a strong start in the opening period taking a 12-2 lead, but UE proving their monicker, fought back in the latter part of the first period to cut the lead of NU down to 15-16. 

In the second period the Bulldogs were able to extend their lead taking a 22-18 output to finish the first half 38-33, but in the second half the red Warriors came back to life as they were able to outperform the Bulldogs 13-9 trimming the lead down to a single points 46-47. 

Entering the final period the Red Warriors finally were able to take the lead 50-47, but the Bulldogs were able to retake the lead and stop the run of UE to take the victory home. 

Alfred Aroga topped the stat line for the Bulldogs having 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Jjay Alejandro added 13 points. Edson Batiller led the Red Warriors with 18 points, while Alvin Pasaol added 10 points.

What others thought to be an easy win for La Salle turns out to be a gruesome one, as the resilient and resurging Tamaraws didn't give away the game without giving La Salle a good fight. 83-78 was the final score of the most anticipated game in the opening week of the 79th season of the UAAP. 
FEU still missing the service of their veterans faced a more experienced and tougher Green Archers to open their bid to defend their title, the opening period went well for the Tamaraws showing no signs of inexperience they breezes past through the veterans of La Salle early in the game taking a 16-12 lead, though La Salle was able to end the first period on their side 28-25. 

Entering the second period the Green Archers started to pull away, taking an 8-0 run to start the period, keeping FEU at bay and struggling to match their offense and defense finishing the third period with a 51-43. 

In the second half La Salle continues to punish the Tamaraws as they were able to establish a commanding 64-50 lead at the start of the third period, but the Tamaraws were up to prove they are resilient enough to come back in the game cutting the lead of La Salle down to three, 63-66 at the end of the third period. 

In the final period the Green Archers were able to recover keeping FEU in a striking distance, but entering the mid part of the final period FEU started to post a serious threat as they were able to tie the game at 74. The Tamaraws almost had a come back, but the Green Archers were able to hold on to take their  first win. 

Jeron Teng led the Green Archers with 28 points, Ben Mbala added 13 points and 23 rebounds, while rookie Aljun Melecio contributed 10 points. On the side of the Tamaraws, Ron Dennison and Joe Trinidad combined 25 points to lead the scorers of FEU,

The NU Lady Bulldogs escape the gritty Lady Warriors of UE 62-58 to open their title defense, Gemma Miranda led the Lady Bulldogs with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while last years MVP Afril Bernardino and Ria Nabalan added 14 points each with Bernardino having 10 rebounds.

Ruth Tacula led the Lady Warriors wth 18 points and 12 rebounds, followed by Eunique Chan with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Love Sto Domingo with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

The DLSU Lady Archers crushed the FEU Lady Tamaraws 76-52 to open their campaign to reclam the title, Chay Vergara led the Lady Archers with 19 points, Snow Penaranda added 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Camlle Claro scored 13 points.

No one on the side of the Lady Tamaraws scored in double digit, though Valerie Mamaril top scored for them with 9 points, followed by Lorraine Ventura and Precious Arellado with 8 points each.
