#UAAP78 Day 5: UST Stays Undefeated, FEU Charges Back



In the first game of the Sunday games of the 78th season of the Men's Basketball Tournament of the UAAP at the Mall of Asia Arena, the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers remained undefeated after giving the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons their first loss of the season 67-59.

The game started slow for both squads as they only manage to end the first period in 10-4, In the second quarter, though UST still leading at the end of the second period, UP manages to tie the scoring output of the tigers at 11-all to end the half at 21-15.

Entering the second half UP manages to get the lead at 25-27 after a three point shot by JR Gallarza with 6:14 seconds left in the third. But Ed Daquioag and Kevin Ferrer sparked a 12-4 run for UST to get the lead back at 37-31 with 2 minutes remaining, but UP made their own run to trim down the lead of UST by 2 at the end of the third 42-40.

In the final period, Daquioag punishes the poor defense of UP scoring a couple of shots to boost the Tigers to a 51-44 lead with 4:24 remaining, UP still fighting in the game trimmed down the lead of UST to just three points at 55-52 with less than 2 minutes, but Daquioag was just unstoppable as he continues to carry UST past UP until the end of the game.

Ed Daquioag scored 26 points for the Tigers in this game, adding to that is Kevin Ferrer's 16 points. Meanwhile, Diego Dario and Paul Desiderio combined 27 points for UP in losing efforts.

In the second game, the Far Eastern University Tamaraws stuns the De La Salle Green Archers 93-75 to bounce back after their single point loss to UST last Wednesday.

FEU started the game strong, even with RR Pogoy sitting out early in the game after suffering a sprained ankle, the Tamaraws even led the Green Archers 11-4 with 6 minutes left in the game, but La Salle slowly trimmed the lead down and eventually with a couple of runs of Jeron Teng the Green Archers took over a huge 23-15 lead against the Tamaraws with 1:30 left in the first, but FEU didn't let La Salle pull away easily as they made a 2-9 run with Mac Belo sealing the first quarter with a buzzer beating 3 point shot to keep the game close at 25-24. 

In the second quarter, La Salle started the game with 4 straight points to lead 29-24, but Mike Tolomia and Francis Tamsi hit back to back threes to get a single point lead over La Salle 30-29, but a 0-6 run by the Green Archers took back the lead to 35-30 with 5 minutes left. Mike Tolomia, Joe Trinidad, Francis Tamsi, and Wendell Comboy poured in 15-2 run to take a 45-37 lead over the Green Archers with less than 2 minutes left in the first half, but Jeron Teng and Jason Perkins scored a couple points to end the first half at 45-43.

Entering the third quarter the Green Archers were able to keep the ball game close not letting the Tamaraws pull away even getting close as 53-51 with 6:00 remaining, that was the last time La Salle gets close to FEU as the Tamaraws starts to pull away entering the 4:40 mark of the game after FEU made a 20-0 run to end the third quarter 77-54.

In the fourth quarter FEU maintained a 20 point lead, but turnovers and series of fouls bugged down the Tamaraws as La Salle's defense intensifies trimming the lead down to 13 entering the last two minutes of the game. Though the Green Archers were able to trim down the lead it was already too late for the chase as FEU already secured the win.

Mike Tolomia and Mac Belo combined 37 points to lead the charge of the Tamaraws in this game, adding to that is Prince Orizu's career high 12 points to help FEU charge back from their loss. Meanwhile Jeron Teng's 29 point effort didn't materialized as the Green Archers lost back to back games after their big win against NU.
